My name is Andrew Larson and I am a member of the class of 2016 at Calvary Chapel High School in Costa Mesa, CA. I am the perfect example of what you want you want in a student-athlete. I have a strong work ethic both on the court and in the classroom as shown by my 3.8 cumulative GPA, my membership in NHS (National Honors Society), my three Orange Coast League Scholar Athlete awards, and my membership in ASB (Associative Student Body), all while contributing as a key leader on the Calvary Chapel Basketball team. My education is very important to me and I enjoy the challenge that honors and AP courses offer me.
That same academic drive follows me onto the floor in the form of hard work. I earned a role on my high school varsity team my sophomore year and have contributed in every game. During my high school career, I have earned my team’s awards for Hustle Player of the Year, Most Improved Player, and the Coaches Award for hard work and leadership. I am active in my community and have taken my passion for basketball to the next level by serving as a youth league coach and referee for the last several years. That experience has helped me improve my communication on the floor with my teammates, as well as my ability to see the bigger picture.
I have attended PGC (Point Guard College) for the last three years to sharpen my focus on the game, expand and improve my basketball IQ, and enhance my ball handling skills. My leadership skills in the classroom and in my community extend into basketball as I have a strong presence inside and out of the locker room. I am constantly pushing myself to improve in whatever I am involved in; the classroom, the basketball court, or contributing within my community.
My coaches like to play me as a power forward on the defensive end because of my ability to effectively defend bigger players. However, on the offensive end, my coaches utilize me as a shooting guard/small forward, because of my ability to take care of the ball, run the floor in transition and be ready to score. While I am an all-around player who strives to assist, I also enjoy driving and drawing the foul, pulling up off the dribble, and knocking down the outside shot. I play for one of the top AAU basketball programs in Orange County, CA (NLSC- Jason Wright). All my coaches describe me as driven, passionate, hard-working, highly coachable, a seamless facilitator and capable of playing at the most competitive levels.
The high school I currently attend puts a strong emphasis on academics, but unfortunately doesn’t put much importance on athletics. As a result, my high school team has not had the opportunity to play beyond the first round of the CIF playoffs (yet). However, the school’s lack of importance has not diminished my passion for the game since I am a highly self-motivated person. If anything, this has made me a more motivated person. If given the chance, I know that I will be a dynamic all-around player that brings a great basketball IQ, an assist minded focus, and a coachable spirit to a next level team.
