Personal Statement

Playing basketball in college is a dream of mine as well as that of many kids that you meet on a daily basis.  I am extremely hard working, dedicated and a committed team player.  I will do whatever it takes to help the team be successful.  I have played basketball since the first grade when we lived in Indiana.  In a state like Indiana, it is not hard to quickly fall in love with the sport.  When I moved to CT, I continued playing in both the rec and travel teams.  In seventh grade, I was invited to join the New Haven Heat AAU team where I started my AAU experience.  This team had some of the best players in the state and I wanted the opportunity to play with such talent.  I played with them for a number of years and these last two years joined Project Triple Threat.

In my sophomore year, I was the only sophomore to start with the varsity team for all 22 games.  I had a decent year, but realized that as any player, I had room for improvement.  I had games where main my contributions came from assists and rebounds.   In other games, like the last game of the season I scored 26 points in the first round of the state finals.   My coaches consistently describe me as hard working, dedicated to the team and with a great understanding of the game.  In terms of feedback, they continue to encourage me to be more self confident - understanding that I may have been the younger player on the team that season, but that I was there because of my abilities and contributions.

I had significant improvement in my junior year.   My work over the summer focusing on strength and skill training as well as confidence building paid off.   I finished the season with an average of 17 points per game and earned both All SCC and ALL Area awards.   My senior year was strong as well, again averaging 16.6 points per game and earning ALL SCC second team award and All State Honorable mention.   I led my team in points, rebounds, assists and shooting percentage.    I have decided to attend a postgraduate year at Choate Rosemary Hall this upcoming year.    As a young senior, this will give me an opportunity to develop one more year as a player but also experience and incredible institution with an amazing academic program.

I welcome the opportunity to speak with you about playing in college.  I am open to going anywhere in the United States.  My parents have taught me to be flexible, open minded and independent.  I am comfortable that I can play hard and be academically successful in almost any setting.  I make friends easily and get used to new environments as I have lived with my family in New York, California, Indiana and Connecticut.

Regarding my academics, at this point my interest is in Business Management or Engineering.  I have a strong GPA and have taken honor classes since my freshman year.   My dad went to Johnson and Wales and my mom to Purdue University.  Both of them have held me accountable for my academic development and have helped me understand responsibility and accountability.

I look forward to speaking with you and learning about your program.

Jake

NCSA COLLEGE RECRUITING®

NCSA College Recruiting® (NCSA) is the nation’s leading collegiate recruiting source for more than 500,000 student-athletes and 42,000 college coaches. By taking advantage of this extensive network, more than 92 percent of NCSA verified athletes play at the college level. The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
