Although I was honored with the ability to play high school basketball in my eighth grade year I was not the star of the team. I was the guy that could see the entire court. I got the ball where it needed to go. During our awards ceremony that year I remember my coach standing up and saying that he wondered why I even started but then he went back and looked at the stats and realized that I kept the team going, that I allowed the plays to happen. I won most improved player that year and it meant the world to me. I pushed hard to get better.
In my sophomore year I was blessed with a starting spot on the varsity team. It was a daunting prospect. Would I be good enough? How could I compare to the two seniors that dominated the court? That year I was fifth man and played my part but it was the beginning of many great things to come. It was the beginning of James Rojas figuring out who he was. I learned that I was more than just a basketball player. I was an intricate piece of a team. I needed to work hard for them, for me, for everyone that was cheering us on. I became a better person, a stronger person. A person with the determination to push myself to accomplish anything that I set my mind to, and I have!
This last season was more that I could have ever asked for. I was the number one option, the go to guy. The majority of our plays focused on me getting the ball and I delivered. Our coach thought this would be a building year but we made him proud and were able to attend the state championship. My goal is to make it all the way this coming year!
I have pushed hard to become the best that I can be. I will continue to do so in college and throughout the rest of my life. Sports have taught me that I can be anything that I want to be and do anything that I want to do and I promise that whomever gives me the opportunity to play at the next level will not be disappointed.
