Personal Statement

I am 100% committed to playing college basketball. It has been the number one goal of mine for a number of years now. One thing that attests to that statement is my course of action after four years at Whitefish Bay High School (which is where my first four seasons of stats in the stats section come from). Despite having a number of Division 2 offers and earning acceptance into the University of Wisconsin business school, a school into which only about 20 freshmen are accepted, I chose to attend Brewster Academy, a prep school in New Hampshire whose basketball team is always loaded with high major talent and has won three national championships in the last five years. At Brewster, I get to compete against and with some of the best players in the country every day and improve my game. I also get to take a couple AP classes to earn more college credit.

On the court, I won't blow you away incredible dunks or athleticism, but what sets me apart are my high basketball IQ and shooting ability. A spectator would say I'm first and foremost a shooter, but I can greatly impact any game without shooting once. I am extremely unselfish and play with the whole team, giving utmost attention to help defense - I once took eight charges in a three game span - and making the extra pass - I led my high school team in points and also assists - among other things. I have always been a team-first player, and I do not expect that to change at the collegiate level.

I am team player off the court as well. I have never given any teachers any problems and have always gotten my work done, and my grades and test scores reflect this. I frequently volunteer at many different functions, including youth basketball camps at both my high schools and a number of events with the National Honor Society. The thing that testifies to my character most is my Eagle Scout award. In order to attain the rank of Eagle Scout, I put in years of hard work and service, including an 80-hour project where I led a number of volunteers in rejuvenating the entrance to our church.

Overall, I am a selfless student and player who is willing to put in all the necessary work and more in order to help my team succeed.

  • Adam Finkelstein: UNSUNG HERO Joe Sherburne, Brewster Academy – On a team full of high-major players, Sherburne was an unlikely leading scorer, especially given the fact that he forces nothing on the offensive end. However, he defied the odds on Saturday and Sunday alike, playing within the offense, making the right pass at the right time, but burying open jumpers whenever he got clean looks. (http://www.coxhub.com/articles/unsung-heroes-of-2014-national-prep-showcase); NERR: Five different players scored in double figures for the Bobcats, who pulled away in the second half after a relatively close first 20 minutes. Joe Sherburne scored a team high 12 points, going 4-6 from behind the three-point line, to complete his big weekend and solidify his status as one of the surprise players of the event (http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/3762/NPS-Day-3-Recap.php) NERR: Joe Sherburne was a surprise star, scoring 14 points while going 4-4 from behind the three-point line and making seemingly every right play.
