Personal Statement

I truly love the game of basketball and it is my only sport. I am a high motor, hardworking, unselfish, coachable, team player with high basketball IQ.  I feel my biggest strength is court vision and playmaking ability.  I want to be a part of a College Basketball environment that enables me to be a solid contributor, embraces my values, fuels my burning desire to excel and a become part of or help to create a culture of winning.

My first game of the year on Seven Lakes Varsity I scored 17 and grabbed 10 rebounds to start the year with my first double double. I averaged 20 points per game during summer league and worked hard at adding elements to my game. Hard drives to the rim with kick outs or mid range jumpers has created multiple threats to defenders when combined with my effective 3 point shooting.  I feel my on-ball defense and rebounding has improved this summer. Last year, my Seven Lakes Spartans won our first Regular Season District Game vs. Katy High. I scored 38 points, 3 assists and 4 rebounds.

I strength train, Vertimax train and work hard to improve my game. I have unlimited access to shooting on our Dr. Dish at the Hustle Elite facility.   Additionally I have been training with Sei and Lawrence Paye and Justin Jackson (The Fam)  who are all U of H Grads at a local school. We train alongside other alumni who are headed for China and trying out for the NBA or playing D league already.  Very hard work.

I strive for excellence in everything I do. At age 8, I won my first Pinewood Derby as a new Cub Scout and have now completed the Rank of Eagle Scout. I passed Adult Skin Diver requirements as an 8 year old and recently earned my NAUI Master Scuba Diver rating. I led my Katy Youth Basketball teams to 3 undefeated seasons out of 5. I have played AAU club teams since 9U. Being a student of the game I have attended numerous Basketball Camps including: Mustang Camp, Cinco Ranch Camp, Seven Lakes Camp, Summer Camp at UVU in Utah, Rice Camp here in Houston, Duke Camp in Durham, Lincoln Memorial, Trevacca Nazerene, Queens College, Colorado College and U of H Team Camp.  I attended two years of Point Guard College in San Antonio. I have had extensive personal, one on one shooting/skills training with former Rice Coach John Herndon and U of H Alumni Justin Jackson and Sei Paye.

  • This past season (2015) Alex played for our AAU team. It was his first season with us. I can tell you all about his skill sets or his play. Those are all apparent. The thing that was most impressive to me as a coach was his willingness and his ability to adapt his style of play to what we do as a team. He came from an offensive system that is a dribble-drive shoot and/or dish. We play a more pass and cut style offense. He struggled a little at first because his instincts would kick in and he would do what he does drive and dish. Once I explained to him why he wasn’t seeing the results he was used to and what we needed him to do he made the transition. He sacrificed the style of play that makes him most effective to make the team better. There was a fine line to balance between him doing what he does best and making plays at times in the game when we needed a spark and playing within the confines of the offense. During the course of the season he made those adjustments and made the right decisions. As a coach, seeing Alex make this adjustment and sacrifice tells me the type of player he is and the character he has. Alex became one of the key players on the team with his toughness, aggressiveness, determination, and basketball IQ. Alex was willing to work hard on areas of his game that I asked him to. He became a terrific defensive player, floor leader, he rebounded well because of his hustle and grit, and was always on the floor for loose balls. Whatever I asked him to do he went out and gave maximum effort. Another important trait is he is a good teammate. He is supportive and positive with his teammates. Alex possess and displays all the attributes that any coach wants in his players. He has the desire and drive to succeed. He is willing to make the adjustments necessary to make his team better. He will give you a 100% effort a 100% of the time. He understands the game and concepts. He is always working to improve. He will do his best to go out and do what you ask of him. He loves the game and loves to play and practice. In my humble opinion Alex hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. Because he loves the game and is willing to work and is coachable he will continue to improve. I know as a coach I am always looking for those players. The player who is looking to reach his full potential, is willing to work hard and listen, and wants to be pushed and coached. That is Alex and that is the type of player that makes everybody better. • Seven Lakes visited Kingwood for a preseason full game yesterday afternoon. After trailing the entire game by 8-14 points, Alex Burkhart led a comeback that included a 3 pointer at the buzzer to send the game into OT. Seven Lakes then prevailed in OT. Of the 59 scored by Seven Lakes, Alex scored 31 in that winning effort.

  • This past week, our JV basketball team competed in the Alief ISD Tournament, and all of the work put in throughout the previous weeks ultimately paid off as they took first place. Going 4-0 against other basketball teams that play at a very intense and physical level is never a simple process, but they managed to find holes in everyone’s defense and carefully dissect their offenses to prosper. Their first game against Dulles was hosted at Hastings High School, and was a true display of proper defensive technique and execution, holding Dulles to only 29 points the whole game. With a decent display of scoring, Elliot Ducree led the Spartans to victory with a team-high 10 points. The qualifying game against Lamar was a true offensive display, scoring a whopping 60 points against a struggling defensive team. Lamar scored 37, the most a team had against the Spartans in the tournament, but it wasn’t enough to take down this tough Seven Lakes team. Alex Burkhart (13 points), Drew Bulawa (10 points), and Garrett Scott (10 points), all contributed towards the blowout. Finally, the championship game has arrived. With the players gnawing at the bit to ball out in front of their friends and family, they approached the game with a sense of urgency that showed improvement and physicality among the team. With both teams exchanging body blows all game, the Spartans caught Hastings from behind for a 40-34 victory, along with the title of 1st place.

  • Alex Burkhart Katy, TX 6’0 PG 2018 Evaluation from Camp of August 8, 2015 Crafty Point Guard with the ability to run the fast break and finish in transition. Active hands in the passing lanes. Capable of getting steals. Makes hustle plays and gets back on defense. Coachable with a great attitude. Makes the right decisions in transition. Good defensive awareness. 2.0 – Shows potential to develop into a scholarship level player on the NCAA Division II or NAIA level. Rating Scale 1 – Shows potential to make a college basketball team on the DIII or non-scholarship level. 4.0 – Shows the potential to develop into a High Major level NCAA Division I level player. These are the opinions of one scout on one day of seeing a player compete. This type of evaluation is very similar to a college assistant coach seeing a player compete for the first time. The projections are based on over 20 years of scouting basketball talent and watching how young men of similar ability, age and athleticism developed as they became older.

  • It is my privilege to write this recommendation for Alex Burkhart. I have been fortunate to coach Alex on the Seven Lakes High School basketball team last season. In all of my dealings with Alex he has shown to be a young man of character, intelligence, and talent. He has displayed the leadership and work ethic that every coach hopes for from his top players. Alex is relentless as a player, and he lead our freshman team an 18-4 record last season. He wants to be on the court at all times. He has worked hard since last season on his strength and agility. As a sophomore he will be on our JV and will see lots of playing time. He averaged 15points and over 6 assists a game as a freshman. He shot over 85% from the free throw line. As fine a basketball player as Alex is, he is even a finer young man. He displays a great attitude in the classroom. The same work ethic that has made him such a good basketball player has made him a strong student. Alex is polite, and humble. I strongly believe that Alex Burkhart will be an asset to the program. He will figure out what he has to do to be successful and then he will go about getting it done.
