My name is Matthew Jackson and I am a eighteen year old Senior that attends Heritage Christian School. This season so far I average 23.25 points a game and 12.375 rebounds. I was named MVP in the all HOPE Classic tournament.
I do believe that Heritage Christian School is good for me and I have learned to handle life situations and issues through logical thinking and my belief in Jesus Christ. I do believe all things are possible through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13
My parents have sacrificed to send me to Heritage Christian School. They believe that I would have a better chance to succeed with a faster pace and higher quality learning than I would ever receive in a public school. I now understand why my parents did this for me. I also appreciate the fact that the school is based on fundamental Christian values which I can use in my everyday life.
I really enjoy going to Heritage and making friends. These friendships will be everlasting. I enjoy my courses and advanced learning that I receive from Heritage and my teachers are very helpful in all areas. I feel that even though the classes are more advanced than any public school and the grading scale is not the same it will only benefit me in the long run. That is why I give 110% on and off the court so I can become better at whatever I strive for.
As I get older, I have learned that life does not slow down for you. If you want something done the best thing is to just do it. Being frustrated or getting upset because it is not going the way you feel it should; one should just keep on striving until the desired results have been met. I use this philosophy in and out of school and especially while playing basketball.
Heritage has a basketball team which I have played on since I was in the 8th grade. I started on both the Junior Varsity and Varsity team. I have won the All Tourny team two years in a row and this past season. My high school coach says "I run the floor well, finish strong around the rim, have good form on shot, and can handle the ball well." I also played basketball outside of my school for several different teams in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU). In 2006, while playing with the VA Pacers, we played in the National Championship for AAU and placed 8th in the Nation. While playing for the VA Hokies I was recognized for my defensive play and received an award for Defensive Player of the year by the coaches, teammates and parents. I also played for Team Impact. I have also received high scoring champion from our Church league March Madness tournament. Since 2009-I have scored 1207 points, 791 rebounds, 96 assists, 64 steals and 150 blocks according to our stats. I so look forward to improving on what I have already accomplished.
I love the game of basketball and look forward to playing college ball. I am not depending on basketball to pay my way through life that is why I plan on going to college and further my studies. At this point I would like to study Liberal Arts, possibly specializing in Business/Accounting. I find accounting interesting and I really enjoy it. Eventually I look forward to opening up my own business, most likely in accounting.
I would like to be most like my cousin Tony. My cousin played his college ball at the University of Oregon. My cousin Tony was a great man. He had a family which he loved very much. He put his family before his desire to play basketball. He and my dad were very close and liked to do things together like play the guitar. Cousin Tony always wanted me to do my best in school so I can do something good in my life. He would always tell me that basketball is not everything, I always needed a backup plan and this is where school came in. My cousin died in the hospital after he had surgery and I found out that at his funeral how much people and his family loved him and how much he loved GOD. I always wanted to play basketball against my cousin and never got the chance.
I have learned through life experiences that tomorrow is not guaranteed therefore you do what you can today and strive to be the best at all times. I respect others and try to be a mentor to encourage everyone I meet to do and be their best at all times. Life will not stop for you.
