Personal Statement
I am confident that I have the physical and mental skills to play college golf at the highest level.
I have the following two goals:
- I want to compete and win with a group of friends on a college golf team that puts the team ahead of the individual.
- I want to play for a coach who helps his student-athletes succeed on and off the course.
During my freshman year of high school golf, I experienced a season that I will remember for the rest of my life. We won every tournament that we competed in (10) and finished the year by winning the State Championship. We broke our school scoring record twice during the year, and my individual score contributed to our team score in every single tournament.
It was a season that I’ll remember, not just because of the tremendous success that we had as a team, but also because of the lessons I learned from my teammates. Our varsity team included 4 seniors, 1 junior, and myself (a freshman). I learned very quickly from my coach and teammates that my job was to post a score that the team could use, and not worry about individual results. Previous to my freshman season, I had competed as an individual in hundreds of golf tournaments since I was a little boy, and I was used to playing for individual results. My teammates and I played for each other, not for ourselves.
With the help of our coach, our team became very close. We encouraged each other. We cheered for each other. We respected each other. We picked each other up when needed. We competed against each other every day at practice, with the goal to get better for the mutual benefit of the team. I learned that I completely enjoy the team experience this year during our golf season.
I recently completed my sophomore year of high school, and was very proud to win the last two tournaments of the the year. But even more proud of my team's results. After losing 4 seniors, we still finished 2nd in 6A State. And I hope to accomplish many more goals during my next two years of high school.
