Personal Statement

My collegiate goals and aspirations that I would like to achieve is to get a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Finance or Accounting. I would like to have a career in the golf industry one day and anyone of those degrees will help me to do just that.  Another goal is to meet people and make new friends on campus, which can help me to lead an active life on campus by getting involved in various activities.  Athletically I want to be playing varsity golf as soon as my coach thinks I am ready and before I am finished I would like to have been a multiple All-American.

The reason I am a good candidate for a golf team is that I am constantly working to improve my game.  I have been taking lessons with Tom Sieckmann at Omaha Country Club through the Great Golf Expectations Program for the past three years.  I have played varsity golf for the past five years (7th and 8th grades in South Dakota, 9th, 10th and 11th grades in Nebraska).  I have qualified for four state tournaments (one in South Dakota and three in Nebraska), missing a medal as a freshman by one stroke (18th place) and earning a medal as a sophomore (14th place).  My scoring average continues to come down each year, with this past year being the biggest jump with between 5 and 6 strokes!  I am willing to share my knowledge of the game with my teammates and other members of the club.  I have helped out with several junior camps with my high school head coach and I do my best to lead by example on and off the course.

What makes me stand out from other recruits is that I have been a mentor to younger students the past couple of years as I am willing to spend my time helping these kids.  I am not interested in the "party" scene like some of my peers.  I have goals and getting involved with that would prevent me from achieving my goals.  I have level one autism, ADHD and ODD, I have to work hard to overcome these disabilities in order to be successful.  My parents, teachers and coaches have all been instrumental in helping me overcome these issues.  I am also active in multiple sports.  I play football in the fall, wrestle in the winter and play golf in the spring and summer.  I believe in participation in other sports at my age will only help me to achieve my goals in my primary sport of golf.  I am an honor roll student with a current GPA of 3.6 and plan on taking the ACT more than just the mandatory state testing as a junior (Nebraska has juniors take the ACT as the state test), as I scored an 18 on that day, I know if I work at it I can get that number higher!  Finally I am not afraid to ask questions or seek the help of my teachers when I don't understand a lesson or an assignment.  I understand that my teachers and coaches are there to help me succeed.

  • Didn't qualify because I had too many mistakes, like doing something that I haven't practiced very much and getting 2 double bogeys that shouldn't have been a double bogey to start with. And finally I shot a 78 (7 over par) and 3 strokes off the qualifying mark.

  • I will be playing in the AJGA Qualifier at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City, KS on Sunday June 24th. If I make it out of the qualifier, I will be playing in the AJGA Open at Buffalo Dunes in Garden City, KS on June 26-28. I entered this event as Garden City is approximately 7-8 hours from my home. This tournament is an hour from Garden City and gives me an opportunity to play in a tournament regardless of how I do. First and foremost I plan on playing in the AJGA Open!

  • MC, 82. I started the day on the back nine and when I made my turn I was only 3 over at that point. To say I struggled on my last nine would be accurate. I couldn't hit a green to save my life. Missing the cut really hurt after how I played the previous week in Arizona and how I played the first nine. My only hiccup on those nine was a ball that went out. I felt in a good spot. Then I missed a green here and there, a ball goes out and the round got away from me like that. I have some time before my next event in Garden City and plan on using that time to get some work on the range and a lesson or two with my swing coach to get things right.

  • Antigua Milt Coggins AZ Junior Stroke Play
  • 6/05/18 to 6/07/18
  • Three day total, 226, 16 over par, 7th place. The course played close to 6200 yards. The first day was a struggle, I finished with a 79. My shining light on the day was I birdied all the par fives and drove the green on number 10. Day 2 was much better, a 73. I hit more greens on the day and had several birdie putts just miss going in. The few greens I did miss ended up being bogies. Not a single three putt on the day. Day three was a 74 and much like the day before. All in all I was pleased with how I hit the ball. Aside from the fact I was competing against kids who play year round golf, whereas I have to take a break (you know winter happens here in Nebraska) and desert golf is much different than where I play. tighter lies, no "rough" to be found (what the kids called the "rough" down there was more like fairway lies here" and much more wide open. I am looking forward to the Junior Match Play on Monday back in Nebraska.

  • 78, played a little over 7200 yards. Aside from a couple of swings that could have brought my score down closer to par, I was pleased by how I played. Going into the course "blind" and posting the score I did from the distance we played was a good feeling, after the disaster at the state meet a couple weeks ago. I hit approximately 70% of the fairways, but only hit 50% of the greens. I didn't 3 putt, had several 1 putts. A chip in eagle was exciting! I know I can score much better on courses like this, and am looking forward to playing Tuesday-Thursday down here as well.

  • 85-85=170, t-32. I had to step back and really reflect on this. I was playing so well coming into the state meet. I had one of the best scores coming in, giving me the final tee time. My practice rounds were right around my average, my work on range and practice green was coming along nicely. I had such high hopes. As I type this up, I am still in shock at how I played. I haven't been able to pin point any real reason. Sure the wind was a factor, but it had been a factor on a couple of practice rounds and I got through it. I had many people following my group, nothing new as I had a good sized group follow me at districts and some other tournaments as well. I know I shouldn't be so hard on myself as one tournament will not define me as a golfer, as my average dropped some 5-6 strokes this year, I shot under par more this year, and other than the two days at state my worst score of the year was an 80. Otherwise I was in the mid 70s most of the season. I am looking forward to scoring well this summer, starting in Arizona!

  • Class B2 Districts
  • 5/15/18 to 5/15/18
  • 72, 2nd place, 6384 yards. I finished 2nd in a playoff on the second hole. My day started, shall we say, interesting. My first shot after I was announced went out. I end up doubling the first hole. For the next 7 holes I traded birdies and bogies to come to hole 9, a par 5 at 2 over. My second shot drifted to the right and was off the green. I chipped in to get to even. I got it to 1 under and was tied going into the final hole in which we both bogied. The first playoff hole I had to get up and down to save par, which I did making a 9-10 foot putt. On the second playoff hole I just missed my birdie putt and my playing partner made his. My 72 (even par) was good enough to get me into the final group on day one of the Class B State Meet next week (Tuesday and Wednesday) at Quail Run in Columbus, NE. I was very happy with how I played. I am looking forward to state, I hope to be in the mix!

  • 80 (par 71), 6300 yards, 2nd place. Today was tough. A good breeze from the south played havoc on a number of shots. I blocked many shots off the tee and was scrambling all day long. I didn't three putt all day long, which I am happy about, chipping let me down. The greens were hard and fast and I didn't adjust early enough and put myself in tough situations early on. With Districts next week, I will be working on my tempo and short game around the greens. I plan on getting to Wayne several times before next week and play some practice rounds to prepare for districts. We had an invite earlier at the course and I know I can score well there.

  • 70, 2 under par, played a little over 6100 yards. What a day! The conditions were great, very little wind and overcast, aside from the sprinkles we got every once in a while. I bogied one hole on the front to make the turn at 1 over. On the back nine I had 3 birdies to finish off my best round in relation to par in high school competition at 2 under! I had many, many putts that just missed the hole on birdie putts (aside from the 3 birdies, I had 9 putts that could have dropped), so the score could have been much better. All in all I am very happy with my performance. We played this course a week earlier and I ended with a 79. I would say I improved a little! :)

  • 79, 7 over, 3rd place, 6384 yards. The course where districts will be held in a couple of weeks. I struggled on the greens. Just when I thought I got the speed down, very inconsistent speeds from green to green. My driver was working great, I struggled with some approach shots today and as such I was in scramble mode more than I wanted to be. I have scored well on this course in the past, so my confidence will be there in a couple of weeks.

  • Logan View Invite
  • 5/01/18 to 5/01/18
  • 72, 2 over par, 5416 yards. Finished 2nd, lost in a playoff. I hit the ball well today, aside from one hole in which I hit my drive out of bounds (which cost me the two strokes), I feel my ball striking and putting were in a good place. The playoff hole is one in which my coach and I discussed the wind being a 2 club wind. When hit the ball the wind wasn't as strong as anticipated and as a result I hit it long. I bogied and my player partner birdied. We next face each other next Monday at our conference tournament. Results will be much different.
  • Camp/Event
  • Oakland Craig Invite
  • 4/28/18 to 4/28/18
  • 79, 7 over par. 6226 yards. 2nd place. The day started off good. I was two over going into my 8th hole (started on #6). I was feeling good as several par 5's and a couple of reachable par 4's were coming up. I proceeded to hit two balls out. One to the left, the other, just long. After all was said and done I ended up with an 8 on the par three and was now 7 over with 10 holes to play. I went on a nice little run (birdie, bogie, birdie, birdie, par) to get to 5 over with 5 to play. I finished with 2 bogies in that stretch and finished 7 over. Those last ten holes were a grind. I learned a lot this day. Mostly to be patient and stay focused on the task at hand. I could have let the big number get to me. Instead I came back and got my self back into a position to finish with a decent number.
  • Camp/Event
  • Quad vs. Oakland Craig, Blair, and North Bend Central
  • 4/26/18 to 4/26/18
  • 40, 4 over par (par 36), back nine at Indian Trails. Finished 1st. The wind was a howling! Coming off the 69 from the day before I tried to guard against a major letdown. I did have my first three putt on the season, time to begin a new streak! The scores were a little higher all around because of the conditions and the back nine at ITCC does play harder than the front. I feel that I did as well as I could have considering the conditions.
  • Camp/Event
  • North Bend Invite
  • 4/25/18 to 4/25/18
  • 69, one under par (70), 5770 yards. The day started off with overcast skies, the sun came out early and turned out to be a beautiful day to be on the course. To say I was excited about my performance would be an understatement! I shot my first round under par and broke 70! Yes the course is less than 6000 yards, despite that it is still a challenging course with water coming into play on several holes and strategically play trees forcing players to play for position. I had four birdies to go along with three bogies on the day. Again, no three putts. The three bogies are due to missing the greens and scrambling to save par, each putt just missed. I continue to work hard on this aspect of my game.

  • 76, four over par (72), 6547 yards, tie for 2nd (1st was a 73). The day started off cold. They moved the start back an hour to 10 AM, it was in the mid 30's and only warmed up to the upper 40's by the time I finished my round. Thankfully their was very little wind. I can't say I am overly excited about my round, but it being the first 18 hole event of the year I can really complain either. I had some ups and some downs. A double (ball in the hazard) to go along with 5 bogies (missed greens) didn't help my scores. The three birdies and nine pars were nice. I am still working on hitting more greens. Again, no three putts!
  • Camp/Event
  • Triangular Vs. Wisner Pilger & Logan View
  • 4/10/18 to 4/10/18
  • 35, even par, 2818 yards. Finally a warm day! Mid 60's, light wind out of the west. Had it not been for the three par 3's I would have been 3 under on the day. Those were the greens I missed, I gave myself good looks at par on all of them, catching the edge on two of them and leaving it right next to the hole on the other. I had one birdie and one eagle to go with 4 pars on the day to finish first by 6 strokes. I still have yet to three putt this year, something I have been working very hard on, I hit more greens today and it paid off. I will continue to work on approach shots as well as my short game.
  • Camp/Event
  • Triangular Vs. North Bend Central & TH
  • 4/09/18 to 4/09/18
  • 39, four over par, 2818 yards. Today was cold, lower 40's with a light wind out of the north. I had 5 pars with 4 bogies on the round. I finished first by 7 strokes. I missed too many greens and scrambled on several holes. The cold didn't bother me as I was prepared for it. I made adjustments on club selection do to the fact that the ball won't fly as far in colder weather. I would admit that I was too careful as I left a few approaches short (green and hole). All in all I feel good about where my game is at this early in the season. No three putts, so I am excited where my work on the greens has been.

  • Triangular Vs. Oakland-Craig & Pender
  • 3/27/18 to 3/27/18
  • 39, 4 over par, 2818 yards. The afternoon was amazing considering it was late March in Nebraska. Temps were in the lower to mid 50s, a very slight breeze (if any). My only hiccups were on holes 2 and 9, both of which I doubled. On hole 2 I hit my pitch shot thin and it went over the green and I scrambled to get a double. On hole 9 I hit my drive OB and was in scramble mode. All in all I was happy with my performance as it was our first competition of the year and also the first in which I was playing with a new driver, 3 wood and hybrid. I am hitting those clubs long and straight, my confidence is where it needs to be moving forward.

The network is available to high school student-athletes around the country through valued relationships with the NFLPA, FBU, NFCA and SPIRE. Each year, NCSA educates over 4 million athletes and their parents about the recruiting process through resources on its website, presentations of the critically-acclaimed seminar College Recruiting Simplified, and with Athletes Wanted, the book written by NCSA founder Chris Krause.
