Personal Statement

I started playing hockey at 9 years old. From the beginning my coaches told me that I stood out from the rest due to my coachablity and my work ethic. Because of these qualities I have quickly become the player I am today. My coaches see me as a leader to my team. I was captain of my travel team in eighth grade and am now a captain for my high school's team as well. When the team needs a spark I am the one the coach calls on to score a goal or make a play and put some energy into the team.

Off the ice I am an extremely hard worker. I am consistently in the top ten in my classes because I realize how important it is to get the most out of my education. I was always told growing up that I am a student first and athlete second and I feel that I live up to that statement very well.

I also try to help out where I can in our community. I volunteer my time at my church's vacation bible school every year. I also counsel at my church's yearly weekend camp in the fall and counsel at Lemont's Safety Village during the summer. Our hockey team does various volunteer functions throughout the year.

During the holidays, we team up with Kohl's Department Stores to help out families in our community during this special time of year by shopping with Santa. Our team also hosts charity games with hockey teams with special needs. Last year we played against the TomaHawks. The TomaHawks is dedicated to providing children and adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to participate in ice hockey.

This year we are again playing the Hornets Sled Hockey team. I had the distinct pleasure playing against two Chicago Hornets players, Declan Farmer and Brody Roybal who played with United States sled hockey team in the Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia. They led the US to a victory over Russia in the championship game bringing home gold medals.

I enjoy challenging myself and I would like to find a college that is able challenge me on the ice as well as in the classroom.
