Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Kevin Anderson, Class of 2016, Walkersville High School (Frederick, MD). Originally from Richmond, Virginia, I began playing inline hockey at the age of 8 at a local rink in their house league. Due to my height and speed, my coach put me on defense, where I quickly was the top scorer on my team and in the top 5 in points for the league. Half way through my first season, the Middle School Coach asked me if I wanted to play up as they were short of players. I was then noticed by inline travel coaches, and began playing for the Richmond Rattlers. In my 6 years playing inline travel hockey I had the chance to play for an AAU National Championship runner-up team, 4 Coastal Cup Series Championship Teams. Two 2Hot4Ice National Championship Teams, and one Team Virginia State Wars Bronze Medal Team. In 2011 I was selected to the Team USA East Team to play in AAU Junior Olympics in Hunting Beach, CA. Additionally, I received numerous Tournament Top Player Awards, Phat Tape Playmaker of the game awards, and was elected to the 2011 AAU Top Athletes in the country for inline hockey.
After inline hockey, I moved to ice as a first year Bantam, playing for the Richmond Royals, and in my first year of ice I was a starting defenseman. The following year I was selected for the inaugural season of the Richmond Generals Tier 1 AAA program, and this is where my game really progressed playing against a high level of talent in the National Junior Prospect Hockey League (NJPHL). The following year my family moved to the DC suburbs, where I played for the Potomac Patriots 16U Prospect Team and the Howard Huskies 18U Team. These teams played in the Chesapeake Bay Hockey League (CBHL) at the AA level and in the Eastern Junior Elite Prospect League (EJEPL) in AAA. Additionally, I play High School hockey for Walkersville High School in the MSHL, where I am the team captain, and was named All Conference Honorable Mention. I played on spring tournament teams for the Washington All-Stars and Team Elite Advantage Hockey (EAH) at the AAA level, for the Potomac Patriots in the USPHL, and for the New York Apple Core in the MJHL all at the Junior level.
The strengths of my game are my patience with the puck, and my ability to see up the ice, as at a very young age I was taught to play with my head up. Additionally, my size and strength provides me a big advantage against the boards, and makes me fearless during contact. I maintain a high level of physical fitness year round with a strict diet and workout program with my trainer. The final phase of my game is my tape-to-tape passes that make all of my coaches confident in my ability to get the puck up the ice. This style of play has taken me to more of a stay at home defenseman over the years, so my points totals have suffered, but my +/- is always among the top of my team, and I have been complimented by all of my coaches for my all out effort during practices and games.
Although hockey is my passion, I am focused on my studies. I have been an Honor Roll Student my entire life, and have always been enrolled in Honors and AP classes. I have contact information for every coach I have ever played for, as they have all said they would welcome me to play for them again anytime.
UPDATE: I have committed to play ACHA Hockey for the University of Pittsburgh for the Fall 2016 Season.
