I am Jared Mickelson. I consider myself a very serious hockey player. I see the ice very well, I am focused and play a smart hockey game. I began skating at age 5 and began playing hockey at age 6. I have played serious hockey since the first time I stepped onto the ice. From mini-mites to Varsity hockey I was determined to make all the top teams and I succeeded. I played Squirt A, PeeWee A and Bantam A. I tried out and played for the Wisconsin Fire at PeeWee level. At 9th Grade I made Varsity and then was asked to play AAA hockey with the Omaha AAA U16 team by Coach Dave Wilkie.
I began playing defense at mini mites as no one else wanted that position. I was the only one who did not complain what position I played as I just wanted to play hockey. I played defense through 9th Grade.
In 9th Grade, I played for St. Paul Academy High School. Coach Bill Owens asked if I would play forward. I leave my position up to the Coach. Where ever the team needs me and where I would/could do the team the most value is the position I will play whether defense or forward. During my 9th Grade year playing Varsity hockey I received the MVP, All Conference awards and Rookie of the Year. I also earned my first letter. I obtained 44 points that year which was the best out of all the 1997 players in Minnesota. I obtained a great deal of confidence and self esteem as a hockey player that year.
My next year went well with the Omaha AAA U16 Team. I played 81 games, had 22 penalty minutes, obtained 45 points and had a plus 57. Omaha was a great experience for me as I lived away from my parents for the whole school year. I enjoyed it a lot and have no problems being away from home.
I like to play soccer on the off season of hockey to keep up my training and working out. Soccer was/is a game I play in my off time as it is fun and kept me in shape. I received a Sportsmanship Award for my play in soccer. I played in a State Tournament championship game in 9th Grade for St. Paul Academy High School varsity team. I also earned a letter for playing Varsity soccer. My other hobbies include hanging out with my friends and listening to music.
I am a very focused student and have been throughout all my school years in my academics. I received the President’s Award for having and keeping a grade point average of 3.0 or higher three straight years of middle school. As a student I strive for good grades. I work to keep my grade point average at a 3.5 at least. I like and do very well at math. Math is probably my strength. My attendance at school is very good and have only missed school for traveling hockey events. In keeping in shape, good diet and exercise, I stay healthy.
I have two sisters and eight nieces and nephews. I spend a lot of time with my nieces and nephews. They are very interested in sports and hockey especially. I spend time with them teaching them the game and skills such as handling the puck and shooting. I also like to skate with them on the ice in my free time to help them understand the passion, like I do, for the game.
