Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Alec Herman and I am a 5’9’’ 170 lbs. junior at Northwood school in Lake Placid, New York. I will be attending my first year at Northwood this upcoming school year with coach Chadd Cassidy and Coach Jeff Sillengo. Previous to Northwood, I played for coach Peter Worrel at North Broward Prep for the past three years in Coconut Creek, Florida. I started playing hockey when I was 6 years old. It all began with a 20-year-old patient that came into my mom’s pediatric dental office. The patient was having pain in his jaw and my mom diagnosed him with third molar swelling. The treatment of choice was third molar extractions. The fees were given to the patient. He said to my mom, “I can’t afford that, I’m only a hockey coach.” My mom made a deal with him. “If you teach my son (me) how to skate, we will do the surgery. Thus, my hockey career began. I currently maintain a 3.4 GPA and work very hard to maintain or boost that. It is important to me to be on top of my studies as well as to train hard on the ice. I have attended North Broward for 5 years until I made the switch to go to Northwood.
As far as my hockey goes, I am a physical defenseman who enjoys protecting my goalie from opposing players. I also enjoy moving the puck out of the defensive zone with precise, hard, tape-to-tape passes. I am able to hit hard separating my man from the puck and taking 80 MPH slap shots on opposing goalies.
I’m really easy to get along with and I’m open to any suggestions/tips my coaches and teachers give me. I am funny, nice, and I have a lot of character on and off the ice. As a mater of fact, I was named assistant captain for my high school team and my U-16AA team while at North Broward. I’m not the fastest kid on the ice, not the best stick handler, nor am I the hardest hitting defenseman in the world. But, as coach Steve Jensen from Heartland Hockey Camp has always said to me, “If you work hard, the hard work WILL pay off!”
In conclusion, I go to my classes, practices, and games to give 110%. I work to get better and smarter each and everyday. This might lead me to an NHL career or follow in my parents’ footsteps and become a dentist as well. I strive to be the first one on the ice and in my classrooms, and usually the last one off the ice because I want to show my coaches and teachers I care about getting better and smarter and show respect for them.
