Personal Statement

After graduation in 2018, I plan on attending a four year university and further pursuing my interest in sports management. I’ve decided to go into that major because I love the lifestyle around sports and competitive atmosphere. My brother inspired my interest in sports when he went to college for exercise science. In addition I really love to play lacrosse and would enjoy playing it on a college team. My main role model would be my cousin, Lucas, a sports manager for the Iowa Hawkeye basketball team. I’ve always had people around me telling me do something that you’ll love doing for the rest of your life. I’ve played sports and it’d be astronomical to get more in depth in management with those sports.
I’ve had many achievements and have explored events to deal with my major. For example, I’ve umpired little league baseball and managed Ralston JV Legion baseball. I had about 100 hours of umpiring and about 150 hours of management. Also I’ve mentored younger club basketball teams on using fundamentals and learning the game more. These opportunities have made me think about going into sports management because it isn't the same job over and over. It’ll add variety into my jobs as a sports manager. A good skill I have includes; great team work skills, which would help in keeping book for baseball. In the starting of the season, I was one lowest players on the team, and by the end of the season I was one of the best leaders on the diamond. I got the leadership role by giving attitude, mentality, and effort every day when I shown up to a game or practice. I performed those actions by being early by one hour to hitting and leading the underclassmen to get a better batting average.

My motivation would mainly have to be my mom due to her telling me every day to focus on being a student athlete. She really emphasized student because school comes first over anything. She’s always encouraging me to get good grades because that’ll lead to more academic scholarships in college. Also my dad was a big encouragement because he didn’t go to college and he can show you it can be hard at times without a college degree. Also I mainly want to show my parents that I can be successful student with a college degree no matter how many bumps there are in the road.  Lacrosse has motivated me to go into sports management and has influenced me to learn more about the game. My brother has motivated me to play because if you have anger or stress you can go take it out on the field. Therefore, if I’m stressed out about school I have a way to cope with my stress and anger.

One major bumps in the road I’ve had to face is struggling in Algebra 2, just by focusing more in class I raised that C to a B+. Also, I paid attention to every part of the notes and asked questions when I didn’t understand. I went in after class to retake the tests that I didn’t do well on, which raised my grade. When I stick my mind to something that needs to be done and will affect me in the future, I focus on the subject so much more. Even though every class I’ll take in the future will be important to me. Sometimes my grade will decrease but when I realize my grade has dropped I realize that I can finish anything I put my mind to.

My life experiences have made me the person I am today. All the challenges I’ve had has helped me get through life and make the right decisions. Also, I’m looking forward to playing lacrosse in college because it’ll help me take my mind off of school when it becomes a lot to handle. I really want to go to college and pursue my enjoyment into sports management.
