Personal Statement

When I first started playing lacrosse I didn’t have too much interest in the sport. When I was in second grade my parents signed me up for a beginner’s clinic in my town to introduce me to Lacrosse. As I grew as a young player I did not develop any strong interests for the sport, but it wasn’t until seventh grade that I finally began to understand the true qualities of what it meant to be part of a team. The season prior to seventh grade, my team was not cohesive. All of my teammates separated themselves into different isolated social groups and only the best players were present on the field. We were not a team, we were individuals playing for ourselves, rather then for a common goal. When my seventh grade season came around I thought this would be my last season playing lacrosse because, at the time I was not one of the strongest players. I also felt disconnected from my teammates, in my perspective they weren’t my teammates they were just kids I played lacrosse with. When the first game of the season came along, something had changed. I saw the camaraderie among my teammates that was absent in the seasons before. This was demonstrated by numerous weekends that we would organize pickup games against each other then all go out to lunch as a team. There were no longer isolated groups, good players, or bad players, we were are all players and part of one team in search of achieving one common goal. During games, everyone trusted each other with the ball, there were passes, plays, and unity, instead of just one player running and dodging the entirety game. My seventh grade season built not only my love for lacrosse, but my leadership skills as well. It was this season that I was named captain of my team. Because of hard work, and good coaching, I became confident on the field, and my skills grew enough to be a defensive threat on the starting roster. Every season since then, the characteristics that I learned about myself back in middle school, continue to grow and make me a better player every time I step onto the field.

I want my college years to be about personal growth on and off the field, as a player and as a student. My goal is to explore a major in architectural design and possibly major in sciences. On the field, I plan to be a diverse player and have a positive influence on the team. As I grow physically and mentally throughout my college Lacrosse career, I will strive to be an asset to the the defensive line and the team. Most importantly, I will strive to conduct myself with honor and respect both on and off the field, knowing that my choices and actions will reflect on my team, my coaches and my school.
