I have always loved the game of hockey and wanted to play, but my mom said no. In middle school, I discovered lacrosse. It was the perfect solution. It was kind of like hockey but in the air, and the middle school and high school had lacrosse teams. Little did she know how physical and aggressive the sport is or that I would become a goalie. My introduction to lacrosse and the rules of the game was in 7th grade, but we were not allowed to play or practice together because of the pandemic. My 8th grade year is when I first started actually playing. I was a short stick midi. My midi experience was short-lived, because the middle school team did not have a goalie. No goalie = no play. No one else was stepping up, so I volunteered to give it a try. The rest is history.
I feel being a goalie has a ton of positives, especially when I make the save, even more so a save that no one expected. When we win, it is a natural high. When we lose, I carry that loss and reflect on my role in that loss. Sometimes, it even means eating humble pie and apologizing to the team for what I could have done better. I was recently asked what I love about being a goalie. Sure, it’s fun stuffing opposing players on the crease. For me, it’s all about the team. I love being the backbone of the team, that last line of defense, and that person the team can rely on. I don’t do what I do for me, I do it for the team.
