“It’s only a game. It can only change lives.”(Fredrik Backman) Soccer has changed my life to the point of transferring high schools. I started with a recreation team when I was six years old. At ten, I moved to a competitive team where my love for the game grew. Since 2012, I have been with the same club, CVU, where a few of us have stayed and learned the importance of loyalty. A turning point came freshman year, when I was cut from the Jesuit soccer team. The disappointment drove me to work harder. Beyond CVU training, I would juggle daily, work on my small ball skills, have my dad kicking 1000s of balls to me for first touch practice and then condition to finish then became one of the best players on my club team. Two weeks before the Jesuit tryouts sophomore year, I set up cones in my room nightly to work on my small ball skills with a tennis ball. At tryouts, it was clear the coaches had already decided the team and was cut from the Junior Varsity squad. It was clear to me I would not play at Jesuit. Christmas vacation 2016, I decided to transfer second semester to El Camino High School. I immediately tried out and made the Varsity team and played every minute of the season. I won the “Athlete of the Month” for February. After the season ended, I was one of two players selected for a special training program with coach Allan Posner, who chooses players with academic excellence, leadership qualities and the potential to play soccer in college. My ultimate goal is to play in college while pursuing a degree and eventually becoming a firefighter to serve my community.
