Personal Statement
I am the son of two hardworking Mexican immigrants. Growing up I first learned how to speak spanish. Although this was a setback it would not affect me athletically. I found my love through a soccer ball, Ever since I can remember I would much rather be kicking a ball than doing school work. This all changed once I was transferred into Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies a magnet school. Here, I began to realize that I had catching up to do. English was a struggle until middle school where I began to start challenge myself in honor classes. Once in high school, I found what would be my spark in education, a program called AVID. AVID is a college preparatory program that helps first generation students like myself by providing tutoring, organizational skills, and information about colleges and how to be successful. Here is where I would obtain the extra help I needed and the encouragement and support to take higher level classes. This was my start to learning about the opportunities I could gain through education and what would be needed to reach my goals of attending a university. Meanwhile, on the field, I learned how to become disciplined, determined, and accountable. Soccer was a safe spot for me due to the stress that was caused in school here I would learn how to be a leader and not give up. Whether it is doing sprints or being stuck in a certain problem soccer was my outlet. Here I would become captain to four different coaches playing at the highest level available in California soccer. Now, through the help of AVID and the sport of soccer I would become who I am today. I see myself as a very determined person being able to set goals and being able to keep them. I have just accomplished my goal of becoming an honor role student with a 3.16 GPA, a highly esteemed award for both my parents and the school. I avoid becoming comfortable and try new ways to challenge myself whether it is playing a new sport like volleyball, taking honors and AP courses, or being the first in my family to attend a four year university. Not only will I attend a four year university but, I will make the best out of it and be as involved as possible. When it comes to being involved in clubs at school, playing sports, and putting time and effort into my education I am passionate since it will pay off in the future.
