More than a decade ago I began to play soccer in my home country of Guinea.
I played with many friends who came from many countries: Liberia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Senegal and Togo. We all had different cultures different ethnicities but we all spoke a common language: French. We also wore the same uniforms and more importantly we followed the same athletic technique.
Now, I play soccer in New Haven Connecticut: James Hillhouse High school and in my team New haven Youth. I play with people who come from different countries: Iraq, Morocco, Spain, Cuba, Mexico, Egypt, India, Afghanistan, and the United States (including Puerto Rico). We all have different cultures, different ethnicities, different religions but we all speak a common language: English. We wear the same uniform and we follow the same athletic technique.
I have learned from this experience that sports are universal. Often, different cultures, ethnicities and religions bring conflicts and even war. Why? Because people who have different cultures or languages cannot communicate. With soccer we can all communicate and agree on something. Equally important, I have learned that a common language can bring cultures, religious, ethnicities together so they can communicate and avoid conflict.
The reason that I am so capable is that I have learned to communicate through universal sport soccer and two universal languages: French in West Africa Guinea and English in United States.
When I go to college, I will be able to adjust to the new environment, the new cultures because I have demonstrated that I am capable of making such a major change.
