Personal Statement

I have been playing competitive soccer on club and school teams since second grade, and my dream is to continue my soccer career in college.  I hope to find a position with a college or university that has both very high academic and athletic standards.   I have been a defensive player exclusively since third grade, and believe that I possess physical attributes, skills and instincts to allow me to be successful at the collegiate level.   My job has always been to stop the opponent from scoring, and each team I played on allowed very few goals.  If a goal is scored on my keeper, I take it personally.  I am never satisfied unless we shut out the other team.

In the past two years, I have worked very hard in the gym to improve my strength and speed, and have become a very physical player.   I am known for my solid footwork.   I have also used my strength to be very effective on both the offensive and defensive ends of corner kicks.   This past fall, I scored five goals for my high school team on corner kicks,   In defending corner kicks, I always take on the opponent’s biggest player to prevent him from getting near the ball.

I believe I have a great understanding of what is involved in becoming a successful student athlete.  Both of my parents were Division 1 athletes, and my two older brothers have played football at the collegiate level (one at Carnegie Mellon, the other at Davidson).  Each of them has set valuable examples for me, and I understand the commitment necessary to succeed as a student athlete.

I have been fortunate to have attended one of the highest ranked academic high schools in the state, which has a very strong teaching staff, and high achieving students.  I have worked hard and been successful in the classroom, and am very confident that I am well-prepared for college academics.

My club team and high school coaches are very successful former players themselves, and I am the player I am today because of them.  My club team coach for seven years, Jerry Moyer, played at Penn State and was an All-American.  A recommendation letter from him can be found in this profile under the “Athletics” tab.

I am also considering extending my pre-college career by attending a prep school as a post-graduate, an experience which one of my brothers had.  If you would consider me as a Class of 2016 grad, rather than 2015, I would appreciate hearing that.

Thank you for taking the time to consider me.

  • Notes: Dear Coach: My name is Jerry Moyer. I'm writing this letter in support of James Bamberger, a student-athlete I coached in the FC Revolution Club for a number of years. I'll quickly give you a few of my credentials so you as the college coach, know who is giving you the recommendation. I was a 4 year starter at Penn State (1981-85) and played a few years professionally after graduation (Chicago Shoccers, Philadelphia Freedom, Reading Rage). I also have coached at just about every level there is. I was the full-time Asst. Men's Coach at Syracuse University, the Head Men's and Women's Coach at Moravian College, and have coached all ages of premiere soccer and a few ODP teams. Enough about me. James is a gifted athlete and a most tenacious defender. I'm guessing he goes about 6'1" / 175 lbs. He's very good in the air (both defensively and offensively) and is an 'old-school' hard-nosed defender, primarily at the center-back position. He's also more than capable technically. On the teams I coached, we played out of the back more than we punted and James is very capable with the ball at his feet. He's also very comfortable in tight situations and with his decision making. I believe as good as he is right now, his better days are clearly ahead of him. He has the 'physical gifts' you can't teach and he's only recently become very serious about his soccer future. He was a very good baseball player and played other sports growing up. He's now focused on soccer and literally getting better by the day. Obviously this letter of support will vary just a bit depending on who is reading it. It is my belief that James could contribute today at the D-3 and many/most D-2 schools. With a little further growth, and in the right program/situation, I believe he has the attributes to continue his growth and contribute at the D-1 level. Again, he certainly has the physical attributes to play at the highest level. You can't teach his size and strength. One final thing. James comes from a great family with parents who get this process and who were both high level athletes. They've raised a great young man who will be an asset to your program both on and off the soccer field. James is a good friend of my son and I've had the pleasure of being around him for a number of years. Simply stated, he's the type of kid coaches love to coach. If there is anything else I can do to help you evaluate James as a potential student-athlete at your school, please don't hesitate to contact me. Jerry Moyer 610-468-8225 / [email protected]
