Personal Statement

I would like to tell you a little about myself. I was born in the UK, and moved to Portugal when I was 5. I went to local Portuguese schools until I was 12. In 2008 my family moved to Alaska.
I started competitive swimming in 6th grade when I joined my club team and loved it. I have made consistently good progress with my strokes and times. I am captain of North Pole Aquatic Club team and have been since 2012. I was vice captain of North Pole High swim team in my Sophmore year, in my Junior year I was the Team Captain, and now in my senior year I am honored to beTeam Captain again. I take these roles very seriously, and enjoy helping and encouraging my team mates. I have my WSI certificate and  Red Cross Lifeguards certificate. I have a part time job as a life guard and teach swim twice a week.
I take my academics as seriously as my swimming. My weighted GPA is 3.5, I took AP English in my junior year and I am taking it now as a senior. I did Honors English in my sophmore year. I am also taking AP Government 2nd semester and I am a teacher assistant for Spanish Level 1, whilst also completing Spanish level 4. This summer I completed a 6 week immersion course in Spanish at UAF, which earned me 1/2 a high school credit and 3 college credits. I am a student mentor as part of my school's Ignition Program for freshmen and new students. September 2015 I was voted Homecoming King which I was both honored and surprised by. I haven't decided on a major for college, but English and Spanish (I am my high school's Spanish Student of the Year 2013-14) are my best classes, so my major will probably be based on either or both of these.
I may not be the fastest swimmer in every race  but I give it my all in the water. I would be able to contribute to a college team as a consistent 50 & 100 free swimmer and be versatile enough to hold my own in the other strokes and races. I know I have a lot of growing and maturing to do, and fully expect to be at my best in the pool during my college years with the right team and coach. One of my main goals is to coach swim once I have graduated college, time and experience will tell if it is for a college, high school or a club team, but I want to pass on my love of my sport to future generations.
