Personal Statement
To me, perseverance is everything. In my swimming career, I’ve hit many “bumps” in the road. When I first began swimming, my first team was very low intensity. As I swam more and more, I realized that I really liked winning. It was worth all the effort in and out of the pool. I became very disciplined about using every minute out of the pool efficiently for studying, friends, and drums. I counted on my coach to provide everything else I needed to win at swimming. That didn’t work out so well: the team’s circumstances changed and a string of coaches later, the team dissolved. I switched to high-intensity team where I swam huge yardage, and ultimately that coach left as well and the team dissolved. Despite all this, I loved the collaboration and guidance of having a coach and sharing great times with my teammates, but without those things, I realized the ultimate motivation has to come from me. Once I hit the water, there’s no half-effort. I am where I want to be. I believe I am just starting to scratch the surface of what I’m capable of, and I plan to push my limits, regardless of any other circumstances. I think this perseverance would make me a good addition to any team, and I am looking to become part of strong program that values consistent effort and a strong will to succeed.
I am looking to be part of a program with great camaraderie as well. Some of my fondest memories are the laughs I’ve had with my teammates who’ve gone through several teams and coaches with me, and the bonds we’ve created. I know what a special thing it is to have a team click and want to support each other to the highest levels. In and out of the pool, it’s the most satisfying feeling in the world to share a laugh and make the pursuit of excellence a little lighter.
