Personal Statement

Good Morning Coach
I had a very busy week last week. To kick off the high school season we had two duel meets and a prelim/ final invite. Last week I went life time bests in my 50 and 100 freestyle. This time last season I was averaging 54s in my 100 free and 25s in my 50 free. This week I did not go slower than  52 and  23. The highlight of my week had to be my 100 free on the medley relay on Saturday. After a long hard week of swimming I was very sore and tired but I went a 50.94.
I will be competing for my club at the Makos meet in Miami of Ohio.
Have a good day,
Gus Moore

Service

How I am involved in service in my community and why these efforts are important to me:

I have had many opportunities to be involved with service to my community throughout the last 11 years in scouting. Community projects have ranged from park/river clean up to setting up and providing security for various community activities such as Relay for Life in my hometown. In achieving my rank of Eagle Scout a large portion of the requirement was creating, planning, and managing a community service project. For my particular project, I built a bicycle bridge needed at our local park. I have assisted on several other Eagle projects completed by my fellow scouts. For example, we provided needed maintenance at the Outdoor Learning Center that relies completely on donations and support from the community to stay operational to teach the children in the community about nature and preservation. Budget cuts in the school corporation would have closed this valuable resource if not for the generosity of the community. A last example of the type of work that is done through Eagle Projects that I participated in is, I helped to create a prayer garden for one of our local churches. These are just a few examples of the opportunities I have had to provide community service through scouting.

Athletes are often leaders on and off the field. One example of how I have demonstrated leadership in both areas:

I have provided leadership in the pool by being Captain of the team in middle school. I have exhibited leadership by encouraging my fellow swimmers to do their best. I have shown good leadership skills by keeping a positive attitude. I have had highs and lows in my swimming career, throughout these I have strived to keep a positive attitude and contributing to the success of the team by doing all that I could at the time. I also lead my team by planning team building activities.
Out of the pool, I shown leadership in Scouting by mentoring younger scouts. I actually and an opportunity to be a leader in swimming and scouting by offering my time and knowledge of scouting to help a younger scout learn to swim and overcome his apprehension in the water. I have continued to go to Boy Scout camp the last couple of years as a leader to give back to the younger scouts.

How I pursue "healthy athletic performance" as a student-athlete:

I arrive early to all practices to warm up and be ready to complete the workout set forth by the coach. I practice safety in the workout room by spotting or getting spotted during these workouts in order to avoid injury. An example of "healthy athletic performance" would be, warming down at the end of meets, even though it is tempting to go ahead and leave without this warm down. I know it is what is best for my muscles to prevent injury and my ultimate performance. I use good swimming nutritional recommendations to feed my body for best performance and do not use any chemicals or performance enhancing drugs. I utilize good time management in order to meet the demands of my school workload while at the same time meeting my training requirements in the pool.
