Personal Statement
I grew up in a family of athletes, My mother being a gymnast, and my father, a Wrestler as well as three brothers who each played many sports. Though I was the first to venture into the pool, I was not the first to be athletically gifted. Swimming became a passion of mine at a young age and as I grew it became more than a sport to me. The team atmosphere that surrounds a swim team by my experience, is unlike any other sport or group that I have ever seen. Teammates and coaches on both my high school and club swimming teams have greatly impacted my life and shaped me into the athlete and person that I am today. I recently endured the loss of my tremendous long-time coach who essentially built me as a swimmer from the ground up. In me, he instilled a work ethic and attitude like no other. Each day he emphasized the importance of showing up to practice and giving your best no matter what. This is something that I never took lightly, showing up every day to practice, doing double practices when it was an option, and always giving 100% of my effort. The attitude that he promoted is one that will always be an essential part of my swimming and also my life.
I will be entering my Junior year in the fall as a student at Spencerport High School, which is a suburban public school, just outside of Rochester, NY. As a student-athlete, I find that the "student" piece can often be overlooked though it is an essential piece in identifying work-ethic, commitment, and achievement. I finished my freshman year with a 97 average having been ranked first in a class of 298 with a weighted GPA of 4.65. I have taken PLTW engineering courses as my school is affiliated with the Rochester Institute of Technology and plan on taking more. I will be taking the courses along with our offered AP courses while being enrolled in my schools honors classes. I have strong intentions of attending a university and plan on majoring in engineering, though I would also consider anything related to medicine. I have a large desire to be a part of technological advancement in our society and I believe the medical field has great potential for improvement and advancement. Between friends, family, my own illness and injury, as well as family members working in the medical field, I have encountered hospitals many times. From a very young age I have been intrigued by medical machines, practices, methods and technologies. I also have a strong desire to be a part of research and development in cause, detection and cure of heart disease, cancer and other disease processes that myself and others close to me have encountered in our own life experiences . Whether it be in my own personal work or funded research, I would like to play a role in advancement of the field of medicine. By my own research as well as other recommendation, I have determined that becoming a biomedical engineer would be an ideal path, however I will certainly not be limiting myself to that as I am intend on keeping an open mind as I pursue the path to my future.
