Personal Statement
Hello, my name is Lee Emmerich. I live in Warwick New York and I go to Warwick Valley high school. In school, I really enjoy math as well as English, however, I still enjoy history and science. I take my school work very seriously and currently have a gpa of 94.7. Because of my hard work in school as well as my community service, I am a member of the Warwick Valley chapter of the national honors society. As a member of the national honors society, one of the things I do is tutor younger children after school and help them with their homework or anything they need extra help with.
I swim for the aqua gems. The aqua gems are a medium sized team which is based in Middletown New York. At the start of the 2015 season, I was named a captain of the team and I have really enjoyed being a captain. I have taken it upon myself to help the younger children to not only do the right thing but also to have fun with the sport. Being a captain has helped me become a stronger leader. As a swimmer, I swim mostly middle distance freestyle events like the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. I really like these longer events because I like to push myself over longer distances. I still like the sprint events like the 100 freestyle but it can’t match the burn I feel after sprinting twenty laps in a 500. I also like the Backstroke, and more specifically I like the 200 Backstroke and I go a 2:01.96. I also like the 100 backstroke but I have more fun with the 200. In practice, I like to push myself and I don’t feel good unless I’m exhausted after. I always want to be improving and I think one of the best ways to do that is to work hard at practice.
Outside of swimming I love to go on hikes, and just be outside. Especially in the summer I like to spend my time exploring and camping in the wilderness. In the summer of 2015, a friend and I went to Vermont and spent four days hiking and camping in the Green Mountains. This was one of the best experiences of my life, and I am changed because of it. I also love to work with kids. In the summer, I work at a day camp called Free Spirit Nature Camp. When I’m working there, I’m in charge of campers ages six to seven. I like to think that my job is to help them have as much fun as they can while being safe. I love to work with them because they are so happy all the time, it’s hard to not feel happy too. I also work at the Warwick Valley Farmers Market and I sell the flowers that my family grows. This is another job I love because I get to be outside surrounded by plants and I get to meet new and interesting people.
