Personal Statement
I am a seventeen year old Senior ready to spread my Butterfly (my best event) wings and offer all I have acquired in twelve years of competitive swimming through sacrifice, commitment and most of all passion for the sport. I began swimming when I was five years old and moved to the Bend Swim Club (Bend, Oregon) when I was seven years old. I have been a loyal member of the club since. Due to my effort, commitment and dedication, I have become a strong well rounded swimmer. My best events include. 200 fly (1:53.90), 100 fly (52.73), 500 free (4:49.08), and 400 IM (4:17.00). I have also competed during my three years in college for my High School (Mountain View High School) as a Varsity swimmer.
Swimming has been my passion throughout these years however I must thank my Mom for making me realize since a very early age the importance of learning. I have taken and continue to take Academics very seriously and I have greatly enjoyed my High School subjects, among them AP Physics 1, AP Human Geography, AP Sports and Exercise Psychology, Honors Literature and Composition 1&2. I look forward to more AP and Honor classes in my Senior year and I am determined to improve the 4.06 weighted GPA that I currently hold and to remain in the Honor Roll. I have received Mountain View High School Academic Achievement during my Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years and I have also just received the Foreign Language Award (Spanish) this Junior year. I would like to mention my seven years of orchestra playing the violin, which has also helped me play the piano, something that a truly enjoy doing in my spare time. I have my mind set on becoming an Aerospace/Aeronautical or a Computer Engineer.
Between swimming and Academics, I have filled my time being a cadet in the US Naval Seacadet Corps. for four years as well as being a cadet in Civil Air Patrol. My interest in Aerospace and Aviation led me to those two programs without realizing how much more I have learned while being part of them-values such as leadership (by becoming a mentor to several younger cadets), integrity, commitment, courage, and honor to name just a few. I was awarded the First Class Swimmmer Award in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corps. and earned the Academic Achievement, Community Service and Recruting Incentive Award Ribbons. I have also done volunteer work in the pharmacy of my local hospital (St. Charles Hospital) as well as in my church where I have been serving since a very early age.
During my last four summers I have travelled to Europe with my younger brother (one and a half years younger than me and also a competitive swimmer) with whom I share many common interests like the love for all water sports and the ocean. In the North of Spain I have participated in surf camps that lasted two months each summer and in Madrid (Spain) I have volunteered at a doctor's clinic during the past three summers. I have greatly enjoyed both experiences and have learned and benefitted so much from both. Traveling to Europe has made me much more independent and open minded and now I am able to see the entire world as my home. I look forward to continue enjoying all it has to offer in the future since I very much enjoy traveling and learning from different people and cultures.
I owe everything I am to my Mom, my younger brother, my fellow students, my swim coaches, and my swim team mates. I would not be what I am today without them. In the years to come I look forward to giving all I have become, and to continue to grow in a college/university with my same values and with high standards of Academics and Athletics so I can prosper in their team and classrooms and we can succeed together.
