Personal Statement

My name is Nathan Callithen, and I am currently a junior at Butler Senior High School in Butler, PA.  I am an aspiring collegiate swimmer, and biomedical engineer.  I am enrolled in AP classes.  My favorite subjects include calculus, the sciences, and political science.  Currently, I am tied for first in my class, along with two others, out of almost 600 students.  I have been pointed out by my teachers and peers as a natural leader, problem-solver, analyzer, and being very cooperative.  Due to the location and size of my school, I come in contact with people of all walks of life, allowing a large amount of diversity.  All of this helps me to be prepared in dealing and communicating with the natural diversity of people.  Most things I am able to self-teach myself and gain either justification or additional information in class.  Naturally, I am a very hard-worker.  When I set a goal, I am determined to focus on it until its completion.  I do the same with school work, such as an equation, math problem, or determining a pattern, as well as in swimming.  I am always thinking on how I can better improve myself and the world around me for others.  I am constantly analyzing and sorting any information I come in contact with and devise a plan of action, or ponder on how to solve a problem.  I do this same process constantly, whether its a math problem or trying to unlock what drives the actions of different types of people.  My goal in all of this is to solve the problem at hand, whether it is deciding how to outline an essay, or a problem on a global scale.  I volunteer my time tutoring others so that they may learn or better understand a subject matter.  My main route of volunteering, however, is helping out with instruction for the local special olympics team.  I have formed a personal bond between myself and the swimmers on the team and help them out by giving some of them aditional time on the weekends and the offseason to help them reach their goals. In swimming, I pride myself in that I have put so much work and effort not in just myself, but in my team.  I encourage teammates and cheer them on; I lead by example.  Whatever needs to be done, I accomplish it.  I want to make myself a better person and a better swimmer; and I have the natural drive to accomplish just that.  I do not want to leave my school and my teams without leaving something behind, whether it may be a physical object, a concept, or a better environment and atmosphere.
