Personal Statement

Hi, my name is Justin Sherrill.  I am a motivated athlete and student, and it's my competitive drive that pushes me to do well in both.  I have been swimming since I was five, and first started swimming competitively when I turned eight.  Since then, I have been pushing myself to get faster in any way I can, I have recently placed first at our conference swim meet in the 100y breaststroke.

College swimming is the next step I need to take to improve, and I simply can't miss out on it in my life. The area I live in is known for it's elite class of swimmer's, and this has really helped me push hard to earn myself a place with them.  I hope to find a college that allows me to improve myself as far as I possibly can, and will match the effort I am ready to put forth.  Distance will not keep me from swimming at a collegiate level, and I am willing to swim anywhere in the country at the moment.

I was voted by my peers to be a swim team captain my junior year, and this can be widely attributed to my leadership skills that I carry in and out of the pool.  This position, paired with my position as vice president of our school's science club, shows that I enjoy taking on the challenge of organizing and leading others.  I work my team to their very best, and "leave it in the water" at every meet.

I hope to pursue a degree in theoretical physics, and eventually get a doctorate.  I have been hooked on learning about the universe since the first time I heard about the double-slit experiment in seventh grade.  I'm currently taking Honors physics a year early at my high school so that I can take the AP course of it next year.  I have also signed up to assist the physics teachers one of my periods because I believe that you don't truly understand something until you feel confident enough to teach it yourself.  I enjoy posting on physics discussion boards online as well.

I also have a passion for building computers, and actually took a computer repair class at the Massanutten Technical Center my sophomore year.  I have since constructed two computers on my own, and repair other people's computers as a hobby.

Thanks for viewing my profile.  I hope we get the chance to talk in person.
