Personal Statement
“Courage” is the best word to describe my family and my own characteristics. Both of my parents were born and raised in Java Island, which is one among the thousands of islands in the Republic of Indonesia. Both my parents have had strife and struggle financially ever since they first arrived in America because of the language barrier, but that did not stop them to be volunteering at my school, or serving at our church. I decided to follow in their paths, and since I was young I have been involved in our church’s children ministry Sunday school as a teacher’s assistant, and when I began gaining interests in electronics, I also loved helping my dad in Media ministry making CDs and recordings. In the seventeen years that I have lived, many things have happened that I have had to adapt and learn to conform with. Being the only Child and the first generation born in America had made my life full of challenges. My father, as a blue collar worker at the city of Los Angeles, works very hard to provide the funds for me to explore and try out anything I wanted to learn such as piano, violin, swimming, tennis and my new found passion, architecture using computer assisted design.
I was always the tallest kid at school and during my elementary years I am the best in playing “hand ball” I call it “tennis without a racket”, but my parents decided to spend their limited funds to give me private piano lessons instead of tennis lessons. Learning music creates a greater sense of patience, creativity, and courage to perform in front of crowds because of the numerous amounts of tests and recitals. I also played violin for my school orchestra and really enjoyed it. I continued playing violin for Diamond Bar high school orchestra for two more years, but my passion for tennis is too strong. I had to make a very difficult decision between tennis and orchestra. Courage, determination, dedication, perseverance, and discipline are the keys for me to make into Diamond Bar high boys varsity tennis team, the most prestigious boys tennis team in the Hacienda and the Sierra League. Through the brotherhood and the rigorous physical training every day, the varsity tennis team has been one of the most major players in the molding of my character.
