Personal Statement

I just turned 16 years old and I am a left handed tennis player. As a tennis player I was always one of the smaller kids in my age group until now. In the past year I have grown over 6 inches and my aggressive style of play is beginning to pay off. Although I was usually ranked in the top 20 in my section and top 100 nationally as a younger player I always had to battle a little more than my opponent to win points due to my size. Now that my body is maturing I can not only overpower players but I can construct points and I have a larger variety of shots then most players my age.

I am starting to have more fun playing and I love the competition. I just started qualifying for national tournament's in the boys 16's and several kids are about to age up in my division in Southern California. Boys 16's in California at this time is extremely competitve with many of the top national and international players from my area. I expect to move into the top 20 in my section by next summer and hope to play in all the summer nationals and establish a good national ranking. My goal is to be ranked in the top 50 nationally by then end of my 16's.

I go to a very competitive private college prep type school called Milken Community High School. School has been a challenge for me as I am one of the youngest students in my class. I moved up a year when I was in elementary school. I enjoy school particularly the sciences and hope to be a marine biologist or veterinarian when I am older. My school has taught me some great values including being charitable, open minded and friendly towards all people. I am a hard worker but I also like to laugh and have fun spending time with friends.

I am not sure where my tennis is going to take me. I have had wins over some internationally ranked players in practice who are in the top 100 in the 18's. I may start playing ITF tournaments next year but for now I plan to have fun, train hard, and keep working on my game. I am looking forward to going to a Division 1 school where I can compete on a national level as a team and as an individual. I believe that my attacking style game is ideal for College tennis and that I will rapidly improve as I get older and stronger. As I lefty I am learning that I have alot of advantages in singles and doubles and as  I get more fit the game is getting easier and more fun. I can't wait to play for a competitive team in a few years and help my team compete for a national championship.
