Personal Statement

Dear College Coaches,

My name is Andrew (Drew) Coleman.  I am really looking forward to playing collegiate tennis.  I strive to be the best tennis player possible.  Not only do I focus my efforts on the court, but in the classroom as well.  I work diligently to receive the best grades possible. Tennis has always been in my family.  My father is a tennis pro and has been one of my mentors and coaches since I first started to play the game.  He played tennis as a junior in the state of Georgia and attended Clemson University and played JV tennis for them.  My mother has also played at a high level. She is ranked as a 5.0 player.  I have 2 younger brothers who likewise play tennis and multiple sports.

I would make a great fit for your team for several reasons. First, tennis is considered an individual sport, but in college you have to work as a team to get the win.  I have lots of experience with teams not only in tennis, but other sports as well.  I have played both football and baseball for my town and in an AAU baseball league.  I played football starting in fifth grade and stopped in ninth. I was the quarterback and a defensiveback.

As for baseball I started in first grade and stopped in the summer of ninth grade.  Throughout my tenure, I was a key contributor on all the teams with whom I played.  In several instances we made it through playoffs and even won the Championship.  To raise my level I then played on an AAU team and was the starting catcher.  I know how to build team chemistry by being a  team player as well as a leader.  As you may know, the catcher on a baseball team is usually the Captain or a key leader of the team.  As this person I would tell the pitcher what type of pitch to throw and tell the fielders the certain base running situations. The only reason I stopped was to further dedicate myself to tennis.  Another example to show my dedication to the sport is that in the summer I teach tennis to kids ages 6-12 years old.

Currently, I attend Framingham High School in Framingham, Massachusetts.  The school has over 2000 students and a competitive athletic program.  As a freshman I played #1 singles.  After the season I was awarded Athlete of the Year by all the sports' coaches and administration. I was very proud of this accomplishment as I was competing against every sport in the school.

On your tennis team I would be a good leader and take great pride in the team. I am a very likable, thoughtful person and have a good sense of humor.  I love hanging out with my team mates.   Because of my athleticism, my personality, and my dedication to the classroom and sport I would be a key contributor to your team and to the school at large.

Thank you for your consideration.
