Personal Statement
As a freshman I was excited, yet nervous for the opportunity to play for the Natick Redhawks boys tennis team. Even though I was not too confident, I was still eager to claim the number 1 spot. I played the senior who had played #1 in past years and beat him to take that spot. This boosted my confidence and I had a great year with a 13-4 individual record. In the individual state tournament, I was not seeded but I knew I was capable of advancing further than the most of the top seeded players. I beat the 9 seed in the tournament and felt a great increase in spirit and determination. In my sophomore year I had expectations higher than I could have imagined. I felt the pressure to maintain the #1 singles spot and to have an even better season than the last one. I managed to obtain a perfect 17-0 record and beat some of the top players in New England in that season, leading Natick to a playoff spot. In the individual state tournament, I was selected as the fourth seed in the Massachusetts South section and failed to make it passed the second round, losing a heartbreaking three set match. Although, I proceeded to think of the match as a gift, I knew it was likely that I would never play that poorly in the future. Thus, I was able to dissect my game and improve upon my mistakes. This summer I went to Amsterdam, Barcelona, and Prague for three weeks , and played 2-3 tournaments in each location. It was an experience that I know could not ever be replicated. I finished in Europe with a record above .500, playing both singles and doubles, and had the time of my life on and off the court. I won a singles tournament in Amsterdam, made it to the finals in a singles tournament in Spain, and made it to the semifinals in doubles three times, once in each city. I am continuing to work on my strength and endurance in addition to my overall game. I am looking forward to getting back into USTA tournaments this Fall and Winter, and as captain, leading my high school team for the next two years.
