Personal Statement

My name is Alexander (Alex) Lewis and I am a hardworking tennis player. I am truly dedicated to the sport -- I train six days a week on the court and in the gym and have been playing USTA tournaments since I was eight years old. I've developed into an athlete who knows the game of tennis inside and out.

In 7th grade, I made the JV high school tennis team and started in every match, finishing with a 9-2 record. The next year, I was one of two students to make the Byram Hills High School varsity team that year, a team that finished second overall in the New York State Championships. Individually, I had a 5-2 record on the varsity team during my 8th grade season. This season in 9th grade I was named All League Honorable Mention on my team. My team placed second place in the sectional tournament. I was 4-1 in doubles and 1-1 in singles for the season.

I bring to my teams one simple promise: I will always work hard and never give up. I am deeply passionate about tennis and always bring the drive, energy, and effort needed to succeed. I know that it's important to give all you can each and every time you're on the court -- whether in practice or in a match -- because you can't succeed if you're not trying your best, and also, because you owe it to your team to have as big of an impact as you can. Also, it's important to set a great example for those after you.

When it comes to choosing what school, I am looking for the opportunity to continue to play the sport I love at a collegiate level, and I am equally interested in programs that will simiarly allow me to shine academically. I am passionate about math and am interested in schools with an excellent math program. I currently have a 4.6 GPA and am in every advanced class available to me.  Both in tennis and in class, knowing at the end of the day that I worked my hardest to be the best I could be -- that's what puts a smile on my face.
