Personal Statement

Running is a part of me as baseball, or football is yours. Things really haven't changed for since 5th grade. PE back then was crazy. We would run, do jumping jacks and run some more. This was the reason I would go to school. PE was the place were I could run for a long time without anybody complaining. My fifth grade PE teacher was surprised on how 4 fifth grades could run a mile so fast and still be able to go through the day. I could say I hated running at first but then I saw the competition. Being hungry to win was what I desire.

The beginning of fifth grade was the competition era. Runner after runner would come in, all four of us would run a mile under seven minutes. I finished elementary school with the fastest mile at Loreto Elementary School. My time was 6:38. I was surprised when my times began to get compared to high school student athletes. I was right their, good enough to run at the high school level. I didn't take advantage of my skill until 7th grade. I was competing in track meets, training for the marathon and running on my own. The feeling of winning and just seeing competition was the best. The mos depressing part was I had to stop doing what I was loving the most due to an injury. Fractured arm in 7th, 8th, and 9th grade. Yes, I broke my arm three times, making me step out of the game. These decisions were never made by, it was painful in the seance that I would see others do what I love the most.

High school came and it all changed. Despite me breaking my arm in the beginning of my fresh man year didn't hurt me as much. Attending a first year high school, it didn't have all the sports. No cross country or football. It did have track and field. Our first meet suppose to be in the middle of April and we started practice The last week of March. We were not prepared. The season went on, not knowing how track was going to be but it was a whole new experience, a lot of fun. Everything changed that year. My feeling towards running grew greater than before. Sophomore year came along and cross country was available. A whole new experience if you tell me. Our school went on to the compete in the Northern League and came in third for the first year in doing cross country. We went to city prelims, some made it to be in the top 30 but that's were it ended. Track season came and we had changed leagues. From the Freeway league to the Southern league our team grew. Coming in second place was devastating. The score was a 13 point difference. I had compete in the 800m, 1600m, and the 4x400 since freshman year. These events are the best I've ever competed in. I finished my sophomore year with a 16:58 in cross country, a 2:05 in the 800m, 4:42 in the 1600m, and a 55s split in the 4x400. I have to say, this was an epic year.

Junior year, the most difficult unforgettable year for me. I was training like nobody else. Summer training at Mammoth for 2 weeks, Mt. Washington training, Griffith park, it was amazing training. Cross country came along and I started with really good times. I finished my season with a pr of 15:56 and yet again a city runner. I was expecting a lot more that year but a few tweaks here and their kept me away. Track and field was the hardest to live by. I have to say that was the year I was hopping my times would get me in to the collegian level. It didn't happen. My events changed, I stayed a long with the 800m, 1600m, and decided to do the 3200m. This was it, we were invited to some amazing meets, against Dorsey the City Champions, invitationals, track meets it was all there. I beat Dorseys 800m, 1600m, and 3200m runners. All three events, first place. May 26, I was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery, not able to run the track meet that, prior to that I was out for 2 weeks, I was going to have surgery. My appendix was removed and I was out for the rest of the track season. 8 weeks to be exact, a total of 10 weeks not being able to run was the biggest pain I've ever felt.

I was not going to let everything I worked for go away. June 12 came and that was the first day I was able to put on my running shoes and say I was ready. It wasn't the same, I didn't let that stop me. Since June12, I been running training and I could say I feel like new. Unbelievable but I feel great.

The college level is never easy. Since freshman year, I been dreaming to run at the collegian level. Not just any school, a school that has my major but most importantly a school with the feeling of winning along side with pride. The college level is no joke and I know my senior year will get me there, I just need to focus on what is more important, me. College is also about having good grades and I know I fit the criteria. Being in the top 10 of my class is already enough. I am a student athlete who strategies with team-mates on how to perform with unique skills to provide a game plan, lead my team to win competitions, and to stay focus in school.
