Personal Statement

Hello, my name is Cole Munoz, and I'm a junior from Colorado Springs, Colorado. I attend Widefield High School, where I run cross country and track. Self-driven, devoted, and passionate, I love to run and compete. Whether it's waking up early in the summer to get in a workout, going for a Sunday long run, diving in for a pool workout, or hitting the weight room, I am motivated to be the best runner I can be.

I understand that I am a student-athlete, and student comes first. Currently, I am ranked 12 out of 315 with a 4.03 GPA. Also, I have two advanced placement courses , and I will letter in the school's Renaissance program this year. (Renaissance is a national academic recognition program.) As the son of two educators, I understand the importance of an education, and I do my best in the classroom by asking higher level questions, using the feedback I receive from teachers, and collaborating with classmates to reach a common goal. Outside the classroom, I attend study sessions and spend  hours doing homework to keep my grades up and learn.

Throughout my childhood, sports have always been my passion. Football and basketball were by far my favorites. Running was introduced when I started to run track and running club in middle school. When my freshman year of high school came along, I joined the cross country team, and consistently ran as our third runner. I ended up lettering in both track and cross country; however, basketball was still my love. My sophomore year approached, and I was very excited for cross country after joining the 500 mile club in the summer. After another successful cross country season, I seriously began to think about my future in running when the season ended. I finished 28th at state with 13 seniors in front of me. Pretty good, I thought. Then, in November 2015, we headed to Arizona to race at Nike Cross Regionals Southwest. It was an incredible and breakthrough experience. I ran a 16:07, placed 6th in my race, beat the 1st ranked sophomore in Colorado, and had a blast with my team. I fell in love with running. After a lot of thinking, I decided to quit basketball and focus on my new passion: running. My decision paid off. This year, I finished 7th place at state, and made the All-State team.

My parents have always taught me to have character and not to be a character. This means that you should act the same around everyone, and just because someone important won't see it, still don't do it. Currently, I am the Secretary of Social of Widefield's Student Cabinet, and we do a lot of volunteer work. I also won the Outstanding Student Award in 6th and 7th grade, and I was nominated for it in 8th grade. I also get many P.O.W.E.R tickets from teachers  for representing the school well.

Without a doubt, my thirst for success and the support from my coaches, family, and friends will continue to help me thrive as a runner. I am looking forward to continuing my high school cross country career, and I believe I have what it takes, academically, athletically, and personally, to run collegiately. Thank you for taking the time to view my profile, and I look forward to speaking with you soon.
