Personal Statement

Change is something that I have had to get used to throughout my life.  As a kid, I grew up in a military family because my dad was in the Marine Corps, so moving was very common from year to year.  It was good for me to get used to this because it made for an easy transition when I transferred to a different high school after my sophomore year.  This was the biggest change in my life at the time, so much so that it compelled me to try a new sport.  To me, trying a completely new sport midway though high school was a big risk, but once you've heard my story, you'll know that it was the best risk I've ever taken.                                             The reason why I chose to go out for cross country was not because my dad did it when he was in college.  Nor was it because I always wanted to be a runner.  The gateway to my running career actually started with basketball.  I used to work with a trainer who would have group workouts on Saturday mornings.  Every day we would run a mile and a half around a lake.  Every single time we ran it I would beat all the other basketball players by a matter of minutes.  My coach was astonished to learn that I had never run competitively  before and he was always one to suggest that I should try it, but I just kind of ignored it for a while.  But he once told me that he had a similar situation in high school.  When he was my age he was significantly better than everyone at the long jump in track.  His coach told and reminded him how gifted he was. But he didn't really care, so he never ended up pursuing it even though he could have had an amazing career with it.  Then he told me the life changing advice that kickstarted my running career.  He said, "You have a gift man, don't do what I did.  You should at least try it out".  Now that might sound really simple, but his words literally changed my life.  Because if he hadn't of said that, I never would have pursued a running career.                                      My goal is to maximize my fullest potential at the collegiate level.  I am a great candidate for your team because I am a naturally gifted and motivated  runner, with the capacity for success.  What separates me from other runners, is that although I placed at the beginning of my career and on, I am still highly motivated to improve. I have been training hard, smart, and consistently ever since. I have been working on my weaknesses as a runner, and am looking forward to continuing down a road of improvement.
