Personal Statement
My name is Tarik Prince and I’m a 17 yr. old Senior at MCA, who is seeking admission into college. I come from a background where very few young people ever strive to do something other than be a laborer requiring nothing more than the very basic level skill-set. Now, there isn’t anything wrong with that for them, but the value of education, hard work, and the desire to serve a cause that is not only fulfilling but greater than my immediate need, has been instilled in me. Where others may see a closed door, I see a hurdle that merely strengthens my efforts to find a way to overcome that hurdle or situation. It is my belief that my existence is a force that has been put in place to help not only myself and family, but also to meet the needs of the community, at large. I’m academically successful and well rounded, as shown in my ability to successfully multi-task being an athlete, a drum major, a community volunteer, and a part-time employee. I lead and learn as I undergo the tasks at hand. Serving others has given me such personal satisfaction that I decided to pursue a career in forensics science.
For me, Track and Field is all about meeting new expectations, making friends, and having fun. It takes an unyielding denial of self wants/needs to attain the safety and requirements of the greater good. This is part of my everyday life. I strive to be a role model who constantly seeks new endeavors to reduce obstacles faced by those who may seem voiceless. By embarking on this path, and training at your university, I’ll reach levels, open doors, and progress like never before. Attending your university will give me access to a world class education and training that I won’t get outside of this environment, which will permit me to continue helping not only my community but also the country. This opportunity will undoubtedly provide me with important skills for my chosen career. So, if I want to learn and grow, there is no better place to do so than at your university.
After researching and speaking with multiple people about possible scholarships, I believe it is the perfect opportunity to get me closer to fulfilling my calling; being the best that I can be. This calling is what stirs me, shapes me, and drives me to learn more and obtain the needed knowledge to set the tone for a prosperous career. In order to make a successful career, I need the pinnacle of training facilities; I need rigorous amount of training. And I’m not afraid or ashamed to get there. I’m focused on obtaining a career from your university.
Being at your university doesn’t only provide career training, it also is a great place to develop leadership skills. However, each attendee should have a fundamental capacity to lead. This is why I believe I’m an excellent candidate. I know that a good leader shows initiative, integrity, and sets the example for others to follow. It takes sound judgment, hard work, and the ability to follow when necessary. Being drum major for two years, a leader in academics, a regional champion in sports and an involved participant in various community groups, I believe that I’ve demonstrated my ability be a leader. I’ve set an example for my younger siblings by winning awards such as The Golden Rule Law of Life Character Award.
From facing challenging situations, I’ve demonstrated my management skills and a great deal more. I have in many ways governed a very large sect of students and athletes. The role of drum major is quite relied on by the band director. The drum major is the extended arm of leadership for the band director. The drum major is also required to lead class and teach new material. The position is also required to run inside practices and outside practices as well. I’ve conducted the band numerous times, and achieved superior scores when being judged. Countless situations have tried their best to convince me to give up, but I’ve stayed focused not only in the band room but in the classroom as well. Each day, I undergo rigorous class loads. College level classes, and all advanced classes have shaped and molded me into the person I am today. A leader wouldn’t be afraid of a challenge and isn’t one to break under pressure. The track is where I demonstrate the ability to stay focus, and do what I enjoy most, jumping hurdles. Remaining focused has become a great habit for me. It’s given me the means and the opportunity to obtain the position as hurdle captain and win first place in the regional track meet. These important skills have manifested their way into my daily life. The community has also benefited from my outstanding habits. Any community opportunities I see, I take the initiative and grasp the challenge head on.
Every great leader has one thing in common; that one person who pushed them to be more than they ever thought they could possibly be, the one who never gave up on them. That one person is my mother. My mother is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. The influence she’s given me is beyond belief. She’s encouraged me to see possibility in the impossible and instilled the fortitude to attain the seemingly impossible in me. No other experience I have ever encountered can compare to the indelible impression my mother has placed on my life. She’s that leverage that lifted me up high enough to see behind that mountain. The reason why I’m even able to have a choice in a career is due to the fact that she pushed me.
In the immortal words of Harold R. McAlindon, “Do not follow where the path may lead. Go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” I hold this quote near to my heart and intend to do just as stated.
