Personal Statement

Within this excerpt you will learn about my past and present track and field experience and myself.

2017 Spring: Starts February 2017

2016 Spring: Participated as a Varsity Member

2016 Winter: Continued training for T&F and competed in Varsity Diving.

2015 Summer: I have been training for track and Field but didn’t competing in USAT&F due to long family vacation.

2015 Spring: My High School's, Interscholastic League of Hawaii (ILH) Track and Field Spring season has just started. Unfortunately, I had a ruff start,   battling pneumonia. This was very unusual for me since I never get sick. It may have had something to do with the excessive volcanic ash in the air. Despite these recent set backs, I have been working hard and am back on track, I have decided not do the hurdles or jumps this season. I am very excited about running junior varsity track for my school and focusing on the 100m, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m races.

2014 Summer: During the summer I competed in the USATF-HI. I took this time to work on sprints and learn more about hurdles and long jumps. I was able to decrease my 100m time to 12.90sec. and 60m time to 7.73sec. I am glad that I choose to try something different this season and have learned that would rather stick with sprints instead of jumps and hurdles. My ankle will be thankful for this decision too.

I have gained 12 lbs of muscle and am more dedicated to work hard to achieve my goals. I need to  quicken my leg return by working on my upper body strength and technique. Cross Country training will not be in my future this year since it seems to be counter productive to my sprint speeds.

2014 Spring: Just finished the Interscholastic League of Hawaii (ILH) Spring season. My meet times were decent. I ended the season achieving a first place medal in the 100m for the Ralph Martinson Invitational. My relay team also placed third in the Junior Varsity 4x400m championships. As a young lady I am adjusting to many new changes.

2013 Summer: The competition was more fierce than ever during the USATF-HI season. During the last month I started trained twice a day by adding speed work and weight training in the mornings. This increased my speed considerably. I was able to end the summer season this year by doing better than the following summer, in all of my events. My 4x100 meter relay team won the State Youth Championship with a 53.30 sec time, my leg was recorded at 12.85 sec. I also received a personal best in the 400 meter dash, by getting a 1:04.94 sec. time. My 4x100 meter relay team also won the state and Region 2 (North West United States), Hershey Championships and received a Bronze medal in the North American Hershey Championships in Pennsylvania.

At the conclusion of the summer session, It was apparent that I could have done better if I trained harder in the beginning of the season. My late efforts forced me to train harder than I should have later in the season. Because of this I am going to prepare for the 2014 Spring ILH track season early, by joining my schools cross country track team and continue twith my strength training. I will be able to increase my strength and endurance, giving me an edge over my competition.

2013 Spring: Winter practice was a challenge, but gave me a great start for the school season. I have gained 2 pounds of muscle and some much needed endurance. I finished the season with 3 Intermediate State Championships: 4x4 Relay, 2000 Sprint Medley, and 100 Meter, missing the 200 Meter by 4 hundreds of a second. I crossed the line first with my foot but unlike me the other girl leaned. I achieved a Personal Bests in all of my events this year. We even achieved a state record for the Sprint Medley, which was last set in 1991. I have learned a lot this Spring and am looking forward to the USATF-HI Summer season.

2012 Spring: While running for Iolani school, I won the 2012 Interscholastic League of Hawaii (ILH) Championships for the 100m and 800m Sprint Medley. Later that year, my 4x100 meter, club relay team won the Hershey's State and Regional II, relay Championships.

History, Goals and Aspirations: Track had been my passion since I was five years old. I remember how exhilarating it was when I raced other kids before and after school. There was only one girl that could beat me, sometimes. she was my best friends. We were the fastest kids in our grade, even out of all of the boys. We had a lot of fun challenging one another in kindergarten and first grade. The next summer my father introduced me to the United States Track and Field (USTAF) program. He brought me to a track meet at a near by high school. I remember staring at the sprinters with admiration. Seeing them get from one place to another, in what seemed like a blink of an eye. I ran my first official race that day. I didn’t know how to run well, but enjoyed the competition. After the race, I remember the coaches asking my dad if there was something physically wrong with me. I couldn’t even stay in my lane. I never had any formal training and ran very poorly. The coaches thought it was amazing that I could run so fast, even though I had poor form. Later that day my dad introduced me to the Renegade Track team and I quickly became a member.

Competing in track is a rewarding experience, one that continues to teach me a lot about myself and life. Track taught me that I am an independently motivated person that enjoys competition. I learned that once I put my mind to something, and decide to “give it my all,” I could accomplish almost anything.  My enthusiasm for team sports has led me to compete in other sports as well. Through out the years I have participated in Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, paddling and Diving. When I participate in track I am not only competing against myself, and others, but contributing to something much bigger than myself; my family, team, school and community.

I can see that my love and determination for track is helping me achieve my personal and professional goals as well. The discipline that I am learning on the track field is helping me in other aspects of my life. I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of a school sport and enjoy a family that challenges me. Ever since Kindergarten I have attended Iolani School, one of the best private college preparatory schools in the nation. From the mentoring I am receiving from my parents, school and coaches I am learning what it takes to be an important part of my team, school and community.

In my elementary school years, my interested kept changing. On top of my list, I wanted to becoming a Nero-surgeon, president of the United States and a journalist.  Now I know that my carrier ambition is to become a Clinical Psychologist. I would also like to achieve a minor in journalism. These carriers fit my personality well. They go along with my independent personality, and affords me an opportunity to be helpful to others in a meaningful way.

To know me better you would have to talk with my family or friends; they would tell you that the words that describe me best would be athletic, easy going, compassionate, social and well loved by my peers. Overall I’m the type of person who rarely lets anything get them down. I usually have a smile on my face, and greatly enjoy doing the things that keep me so alive and cheerful. These things include track, diving, dance, music, piano, and spending time with friends and family.

I hope this report gives you a better understanding about who I am. And how I may fit into your program.

I will look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Ariel Lea Pruyser, 100m, 200m & 400m sprints, 100m & 400m relays
