Personal Statement

Hello coaches, my name is James Barnett. I am currently a junior at Spring Hill High School. I have been running track since seventh grade and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. During middle school, I noticed I was faster than all of my friends and decided to pursue track and field. By freshman year in high school, I went to state for the 100m dash and the 4x100m relay. Additionally, I’ve gone to the AAU Jr. Olympics twice - in the summers of 2015 and 2016, both for the 4x100m relay. Although I didn’t place in either state or the Jr. Olympics, I realized that I still have many more years to improve and become a better athlete. These lessons have helped me realize what I need to be doing as an athlete in order to one day be on the top of the podium.

I’m a hard-working athlete with a strong work ethic who is very open to critique and anything that can improve myself and my times. I’ve been described by my club coach as a great role model and leader for my teammates. I lead by example and I am always willing to help another runner by giving my tips and experience in order to see them improve. I am very passionate about journalism and computer science. I would love to find a track program that not only suits my needs athletically, but academically as well. I value intelligence just as much as I do athleticism. Although I am only in the 11th grade, I have the passion and commitment to continue running all throughout high school and into college. Thank you for taking time to consider me!

Training

  • Off Season Classes
  • 1 year
  • I have just started to do off season training with my track club which has practices every Monday and Tuesday night from 6:30-7:30. The classes are small with less than seven athletes per session. This allows for very individualized work and we tend to focus a lot on mechanics and making sure our form is perfect from start to finish. From Wednesday-Thursday I do my own specialized off season workout given to me by my coach to work on after school.
