Personal Statement

My goal is to graduate from my current high school in Maryland and attend a four year college or university. I will be the fourth generation of college graduates in my family and I plan to Major in Health Professions and Related Programs, and Minor in Education, or Communication. My goal is to earn a scholarship as a student athlete for running the 100 to 400 Meter Dash and the 800 Meters if needed. I am proud that my family has a strong tradition of pursuing higher education. My great grandmother graduated from Fisk University in the late 1920’s and earned a Master Degree in Sociology at Case Western Reserve University in the 1930's. My grandmother earned a Master and PhD from the University of Chicago and currently a Professor, Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin, my father earned a Bachelor’s degree from Loyola University Chicago, and my mother earned a Bachelor’s degree from Morgan State University. My oldest sister just graduated from Cornell University on May 25, 2014 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Biology & Society and she is now applying to medical school for 2015. She ran Cross Country and Track in her first year of college. During her high school years she ran Track and placed in the top 4 several times at either the AAU District or National Qualifiers from the 800m, 1500m, and 3000m races. She ran in two consecutive USATF National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships and was the RRCA Youth XC Maryland State Champion in 2007. But the last three years of college were competing as a Figure Skater on the Cornell’s Synchronized Skating team and skated at the US Figure Skating Eastern Sectional from 2012 - 2014 and also the 2012 US Figure Skating Synchronized Skating Championships. In addition, my father ran Cross Country and Track in college too.

In track I ran in several events from the 100 - 800 Meters including relays from the age of 9 to the present. I have placed 1st to 5th place in various Districts, Regionals, and National Track Championships. I have qualified in the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics, AAU Junior Olympic Games, and the Hershey’s Track & Field Games North American Final in 2006 and 2009. I ran at Oakland Mills High School Varsity Track team as a Freshman in 2011 I earned a Varsity Letter. My Indoor Season Personal Record (PR) for the 2011 - 2012 as a 9th grader in the 300 Meters I ran a 38.42 at the Bishop Laughlin Games in New York City. For the 2012 Outdoor Season I ran the 200 Meters a 23.44 a (PR), as a 9th grader.  I transferred in Fall 2012 to DeMatha’s Catholic High School to play for their National ranked Prep football team. This past spring season I ran on DeMatha's Catholic HS Varsity Track team and ran mostly relays and very few open events. At the 2013 Penn Relays Carnival I ran the last leg on the 4X400 Relay and my split was a 51.50 a (PR), we placed 3rd. We were Co-Champions for the 2013 Washington Catholic Athletic Conference (WCAC), Track and Field Championships. I helped my team score points by running on two relays as the anchor leg on their Varsity 4X100 Meter Relay that placed 1st with a time of 43.11 and I also ran the third leg on the 4X200 Meter Relay that placed 3rd with a time of 1:30.67.

I played on DeMatha’s Catholic HS 2012 Fall JV Football team and my positions were Cornerback, Wide Receiver, and Special teams. We finished in 1st Place for the (WCAC) with a 9-1 record. This 2013 Spring and Summer, I participated in various Combines from Maryland to Virginia. I was even selected to the VTO Sports Maryland Prep 100 and at one of the National Underclassmen Combines (NUC), for Western Virginia on 6/9/13 at Heritage High School, Lynchburg, VA I was selected as a MVP for the Cornerback position for current Sophomores / Rising Juniors (Class 2015) registered as a Sophomore. As a football player I tried to make big plays on the field that helped my team win.

My coaches have said that they enjoy coaching me because I follow instructions well and accept their advice. In track I ran to win and score points for the team championship. I also enjoy performing community service by feeding the poor in a soup kitchen and I participate in church as an acolyte. This year starting in August 24 2013 – October 19, 2013, I served as a volunteer for the Special Olympics and I assisted as a Unified Player and a Volunteer Coach for their Flag Football team in Howard County, Maryland. In addition, I participated as one of two Special Olympics Unified Sports players that played and our team earned a Gold medal at the Maryland State Championships for Special Olympics. I play several instruments including the piano/keyboard, acoustic guitar/electric guitar and I have taken lessons since I was the age of 9. In addition I am taking classes in school for guitar, piano, and performing in chorus. I am going back to Oakland Mills HS because the school is closer to my home and they have more academic resources and a strong Science program. In addition I can focus just on track, including running more open events from the 100 - 400 Meters Dash. I ran in the 4X800 Meter Relay with my Glenarden Track Club at the USATF PVA 2011 Junior Olympics Championships and we placed 2nd I had a split of 2:21.00. I also ran the 4X800 Meter Relay with OMHS in the 2012 Outdoor Track season at a home meet and had a (PR) of 2:15.00. I do plan to run the 800 Meter Dash again in 2014 with OMHS and also with my Glenarden Track Club.

A letter dated January 30, 2014 was sent by Shashin Doshi, M.D. that stated that Bryce Walker has been nominated by his Science Teacher Mrs. Barbara Stromberg at Oakland Mills High School to attend the National Youth Leadership Forum (NYLF): Careers in Medicine, an Envision program to be held this summer 2014. I will be attending this program that I received a grant to attend at the University of Pennsylvania from June 22 to June 30, 2014. At NYLF Medicine, Bryce will visit prominent medical schools and health care facilities. Bryce will meet and speak directly with first year medical students to explore components of a typical first year medical school experience, to gain perspective on the culture of medical school, and to develop an awareness of the key success factors that are critical for first year medical students.
