My dad would always tell me this quote he read in high school and has stuck with him ever since, “Be more concerned with your character than your reputation. Your character is what you really are while your reputation is merely who others think you are.” Having an active-duty military parent and living all over the world, it has allowed me to learn and to experience different cultures and their versions of honor. With volunteering and helping the less fortunate, it puts life into perspective. Being only seventeen years old, it is hard sometimes to understand my peer’s behaviors and resulting drama. The world is much bigger than the problems that seem to overtake our lives. I was raised in a Christian church and love the teachings of Jesus. He was concerned with helping others through their tough times and had those around him constantly focused on loving one another. I believe we should all try to live with putting the needs of others before ourselves. Gale Sayers says, “The Lord is first, my friends are second, and I am third.” Being a good person could be as simple as just giving a teammate a hug who is going through bad times. I like to tell my coaches they are doing a good job when they appear stressed. I want my life to reflect the good that is in this world. Helping friends or just being a trustworthy athlete for my coaches is what matters to me the most.
