Personal Statement
An event which was poignant in my life:
When I was younger we discovered a cyst on my femur bone which required surgery to remove 2 inches of my femur bone to allow new bone to grow back. I was no longer able to play any sports or activities. After six months of recovery I started activities again, but then broke that femur bone which required additional surgery to insert rods. Six months after this surgery I had additional surgery to remove the rods. I was out of commission for approximately 1 ½ yrs. I gained weight and had no muscle left, but I was determined to get back into shape to play sports again. I trained through the spring and summer and by fall sports I was back in shape. I realized through all of this that I had an inner strength and drive to not let anything keep me down.
My sports desire:
Freshman year of high school was my first year of track. I became interested in the sport watching my sister’s success while she was in high school. I had very little coaching my first two years in high school, relying on a sprinting coach trying to teach me. I was able to get the techniques down and it just seemed to click. I found a niche in the sport. It has made me more sociable and I enjoy meeting new people and making friends through the sport. I like asking how kids train and get suggestions on how to do things better.
One of my strongest characteristics that has helped me succeed is my desire to be coached. I never want to believe I’ve learned it all and really take the help and criticism to heart. I’m a coach’s dream and the right coach for me is my dream.
It has also been instilled in me that academics come first when being a student-athlete. I know if anything ever happened that would halt my athletic career, I could always fall back on academics.
