Personal Statement
I started running in 7th grade, and I was always toward the back of the pack. I was just running because my whole childhood I had dreamed of running cross country for my school.
By 8th grade I had improved and was scoring for my middle school team, but running was still nothing serious to me.
My freshman year I was 7th man on varsity: back in the back of the pack from my perspective, and I barely scored any points in track meets.
That year we only graduated one senior who wasn't on varsity anyway, so it was the same team coming back for my sophomore year. I had worked my way up to 5th man on varsity, a scoring position, so I was pleased with myself. That year my team was expecting to go to regionals and make big things happen. When we ended up not qualifying, it was a huge disappointment to everyone on the team. That disappointment really got to me, and that's when I decided I really wanted to commit myself to becoming the best runner I could.
I trained hard all winter during the indoor track season, and when outdoor came, I was the best distance runner on our team, and was awarded Most Valuable Distance Runner my sophomore year.
Since then, I have qualified to Cross Country Regionals as an individual, and remained the number 1 runner for both my track and cross country teams. I am pleased, but no where close to satisfied.
As long as there is a higher level to run at, someone to beat, or a record to be broken, I will continue to train as hard as I did that indoor track season my sophomore year, so that I can continue to improve, break barriers, and become the best runner I can be.
