Personal Statement

My goals in college, first and foremost, are to receive a quality education that will land me a great job out of college so that I can live the rest of my life. That is very long term, however. I want to enjoy myself, be challenged, and meet new people along with this major goal, and hope to improve myself as a person in the process. Running in high school has been such a great experience because of the awesome people I got the opportunity to run with, along with the feeling of being on a team, even if we did poorly sometimes. Finishing a race or completing a workout that you put everything into even if it wasn't required is a great feeling, a feeling I want to experience again with new people. Being a team member has always been important to me, especially in my last year as a senior when people actually looked up to me. Being friends with everybody made everything super easy for me, and I felt confident in my ability to give advice and motivate my teammates to be the best they could be.

What separates me from other recruits is my ability to relate to others. As a captain this year, I lead the team throughout the season but also motivated and encouraged those who were younger than me to train harder and be better, especially in the off-season. I felt the success of doing well in every meet, but when WPIALs came this past November, I had an awful race and ended up not qualifying for states even though I made it the year before. Dealing with disappointment, especially something as heart-breaking as this, and using it to motivate me to improve is also what separates me from other recruits and is why I believe I have what it takes to run in college.

Along with the challenge of being a team captain this year, I also kept up and improved my grades while doing it, currently being 3rd in my class out of about 206 students. I always had a passion for academics and plan on keeping that my number one priority, because even though I love running, I realize that I can't support myself later in life without a job, which requires a good degree in this competitive society.
