Personal Statement
I am a 6' 2" High Jumper and Decathlete from Lancaster, PA. I started high jumping in my freshman year and that season I set a new record of 5' 11" at the ELCO Invitational. I started on the Warwick High School Varsity Track and Field team my Sophomore and Junior years. My High Jump PR is now 6' 8". My long jump PR is 20' 7". I did my first decathlon in June 2014 and got 5040 points.
I participated in my first ever decathlon on June 21-22, 2014 and scored 5040 points. I had never competed before in 3 events, and only a very few times in 3 others. I am very happy with how I did (especially since I have only had coaching in high jump and long jump), and with some coaching in a few events, I know I can get 6000 points before long!
Warwick High School does not have an indoor track team, so I competed over the winter of my junior year as an independent athlete for Warwick during the 2014 indoor season. I tied the meet record of 6' 8" to win the 2014 New Balance Games at the Armory Track in NYC. I jumped 6' 8" at the Franklin & Marshall New Year's HS Invitational to set a new record. At the PIAA Indoor State Championship, I jumped 6' 6" and got second place.
In the summer of 2013 I competed in the USATF Youth Outdoor Championships where I won the 15-16 year old boys high jump. I then won the 15-16 year-old boys high jump at the 2013 USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships with a jump of 1.95 m, where I earned All-American status. I finished the summer by winning the State Games of America with a jump of 2.00 m. I also qualified for and participated in the USATF World Youth Trials.
In the summer of 2012, I attended a jumps camp at Shippensburg University. In July 2013 I went to the Track & Field camp at the Naval Academy, where Coach Cooksey was very pleased with my skills at high jumping.
I am looking for a school that cares as much about their students getting a good education as about helping athletes succeed. I have been on the Honor Roll and Distinguished Honor Roll, and believe that getting a good education is very important. Athletically, I am particularly interested in a school that has a good Track and Field program with a strong High Jump coach. I am currently undecided on a major, but am leaning toward business or communications.
I am involved in my youth group at Lititz UMC where I have participated in several mission trips with the Appalachian Service Project group. I have been a lifeguard for two years. Also, I have been on my summer swim team for ten years and High School Varsity team for three years. I earned my Varsity letter for Track & Field in my Sophomore year, and for Swimming during my Sophomore and Junior years.
