2015 Track Season Wrap-Up (6/14/2015) - Updated 9/10/2015

Overall I felt I had a very good season this year although I had hoped for better performances at the Conference and District meets.  In almost every meet leading up to the championship meets I ran a PR in some event.  At the 3A WESCO South and District 1 meets I made some mistakes and learned some valuable lessons about tactical races and what I need to do in order to compete better in “sit and kick” type of races.  At 3A WESCO South I missed qualifying for Finals by 0.16 seconds.  Those races were the first time I had been exposed to this tactic and I believe I will end up a better runner for having been in those races.  This summer I competed in USATF club track for Seatown Express and qualified in the 1500m race for the USATF Junior Olympics National Championships in Jacksonville, Fl.  Participating in this event was a unique opportunity that I'll never forget (though the heat and humidity was a bit rough on us Pacific Northwesters).

Here is a link to my athletic.net profile so you can see all my results running for Shorewood High School this season and prior seasons: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=4669647.

Here is a link to the results of my event at the 2015 USATF Junior Olympics National Championships:  http://results.flotrack.org/2015/07-27-USATF/Web/Track.php?EN=556&RN=1&D=4

My new PRs are as follows:

          800m – 2:00.78 (improvement of 7.44 seconds)

          1500m - 4:23.85 (improvement of 13.22 seconds)

          1600m – 4:40.55 (improvement of 9.35 seconds)

          3200m – 10:21.19 (no improvement)

As you can see my Personal Records (PRs) in the 800m, 1500m and 1600m were improved significantly over last season.  Since I was focused on the 800m this year and to a lesser degree the 1500m/1600m, I only ran the 3200m once early in the season and missed a PR by less than a second.  I believe I am capable of running sub-10:00 in the 3200m right now under the right conditions.

My goals coming into the season were sub-2:00 in the 800m, sub-4:40 in the 1600m and sub-10:00 in the 3200m.  I came up just short on the first two and expect to improve those significantly next season.  My PR in the 800m still ended up ranking pretty highly.  I ended up with the following ranks in the 800m in the state of Washington:

  • Top 150 Overall [All Runners] (#148)
  • Top 100 Overall [Non-Seniors] (#80)
  • Top 50 Overall [Juniors] (#50)
  • Top 50 in Division 3A [All Runners] (#48)
  • Top 25 in Division 3A [Non-Seniors] (#23)
  • Top 15 in Division 3A [Juniors] (#15)
  • Top 10 in Division 3A District 1 [All Runners] (#10)
  • Top 10 in Division 3A District 1 [Non-Seniors] (#6)
  • Top 3 in Division 3A District 1 [Juniors] (#3)

I plan to move up the rankings much further next year, especially amongst the Senior class.

I have YouTube videos of several of my races this year and last year.  They are at the links below.  Unfortunately, I do not have video of my 800m PR race at the 2015 Shoreline Invitational, however my second best 800m at the Eason Invitational is below as well as my 1600m PR race at the Shoreline vs Mukilteo meet.

2014 Cross-Country Season Wrap-up (1/2/2015)

I had a somewhat rough start to my season getting cut-off and suffering a moderate ankle sprain in my first race of the season. This caused me to miss several races and even after I returned I was not 100% until very late in the season. I was cut-off a second time, fell and rolled my ankle late in the season at the Hole in the Wall Invitational which added about 10-20 seconds to my finish time at that event and also hampered my recovery. When I was close to 100% physically the weather turned bad and I was running on muddy and slow courses the rest of the season. Despite all this I took almost 20 seconds off of my PR from 17:44.0 to 17:24.8. I was shooting for sub-17 for this season so I was somewhat disappointed with how my season turned out. However, I feel I ran pretty well considering the circumstances.

I finished 24th at the District 1 Regional Meet with a time of 17:32.77. This was a little below my expectations as I was hoping for a PR and a top 15 finish. In addition our team finished 4th and we missed qualifying for State by 2 points. It was a wet, rainy day as it had been the last several meets but no excuses, we just came up short. In my final race of the season I ran in the NXN Northwest Regional Meet in Boise, ID on November 15th in the Boys Varsity Session #2 race. That was an interesting experience as the first 200 meters I was running in 4–6 inches of snow and the course had snow and ice throughout. The course was at least 2 minutes slow due to the conditions. It was an interesting challenge of my endurance due to the snow and the uneven footing throughout the race but a fun way to end the season. At our team banquet I was elected one of two boys captains for the 2015 XC season. I also earned 2nd Team All-Wesco South Conference honors for the season. I'm proud of what I've accomplished despite the adversity I faced and I'm looking forward to next season. I’m currently working hard and leading our team in offseason training for Track season. I can’t wait for Track to start!

Personal Statement

For me running has been more than just a sport, I've been running since the age of 10 and started running competition at age 12. Ever since then I've trained year around to improve my times. Though I run for times I also run for enjoyment. Running has not only help me grow in athletics but as a person.

I have many interests and have been goal-oriented since I have been very young.  I have been in band since 10 years old playing the trombone. Throughout the years I have started learning new instruments along the way. I am actually a pretty good trombone player and have been in Jazz Band since 7th Grade including as a freshmen. Not many freshmen qualify for Jazz Band so it was an honor that I was selected that young.

Last year, I joined a group called Explorers. This is a group that is run by local police departments for young adults wishing to go into law enforcement. The group has taught me many things and held me to a higher standard.  This summer I attended Explorers Police Academy which was a great opportunity that I feel fortunate to have participated in.  I've wanted to go into law enforcement since I was very young and have been working towards that goal.I look forward to studying Criminal Justice and learning more about what it takes to work in the law enforcement field.

I feel that I am a team player that will do anything it takes to meet my team's goals.  In addition, I will work hard to achieve all of my goals in athletics, academics and in preparing myself for my career.  I believe I would be an excellent addition to your team.
