Personal Statement
My name is Alex Esco. From the moment I started playing volleyball in 7th grade, I instantly fell in love with the sport. My freshman year in high school I tried out for the varsity team and made it against all odds. I was a 5'6", nervous freshmen who wasn't sure about his abilities. Luckily, my coaches and teammates encouraged me to keep playing the sport I loved. I earned the Most Improved award at the end of the seasons for all of my efforts. Taking their advice, I joined Diablo Valley Volleyball Club where I started on the 16-1 team playing both Libero and Outside Hitter.
During my school season sophomore year, I earned the MVP award for my team and was selected as a First Team All-League athlete. Playing club volleyball drastically improved my skills as well as my vertical jump. The following year, I played for the 17-1 team for Diablo and carried on the skills learned from club into my school season. I was chosen as team captain my Junior year of high school and again earned the MVP award and First Team All-League honors. I was also ranked #35 Outside Hitter in the nation (based on hitting percentage) on MaxPreps.com.
As a 5'10" outside hitter, I am clearly at a height disadvantage, yet this does not stop me from playing the position I enjoy most. Last year my vertical reach was 10'5" and I diligently continued to work hard to increase my vertical. This year, my vertical reach is 10'7", and I am playing for the 18-1 team for Diablo as Outside Hitter and Libero. I still continue to work hard to increase my vertical even more on a daily basis.
Volleyball has helped me to develop leadership skills that I carry into the classroom. I have been involved with student government for the past three years as class president and my senior year, I am the All Student Body President. In the classroom, I strive to maintain my 4.17 GPA while playing volleyball at the same time. I also helped coach the 16 girls for Diablo last year, and have been asked to do it again this year. I enjoy volleyball so much, even if it means I must spend my weekends catching up with school work or being at tournaments instead of sleeping in or hanging out with friends like most teenagers do.
I am extremely interested in a college where I can be challenged both academically and athletically. Currently, I am interested in pursuing an International Business, International Relations, or a Hospitality Management major. Given the opportunity, I would love to continue to play volleyball throughout college because not only do I love volleyball, but it has helped me to uncover my potential, only making me a stronger, more mature individual.
