My name is Marc Moody. I am a 6’7” Middle Blocker, class of 2017, playing for Lake Nona High School and Ocean Bay Volleyball Club. I am beginning my third year in the sport.
I come from an athletic family. My Dad played basketball, baseball and runs long distance. My mom competed in Triathlons and played volleyball collegiately. My sister, Clara, swam collegiately, and my sister, Kalie, was a setter for a Club team. I have two uncles who were semi-pro grass volleyball players in California, back in the day.
I have always been an athletic child. My parents put me in soccer, t-ball, baseball, basketball, and swimming. Swimming became my sport during eighth grade because my oldest sister swam and earned a college scholarship, so I thought I would try it out. I made the Varsity team my freshman year, then when my family moved to Florida, I earned Rookie of the Year as a sophomore on the Varsity team. As a freshman, I wanted to play another sport to fill my off season, but basketball did not interest me.
For a couple years, I watched my other older sister play volleyball at the club level. It had peeked my interest in the game, but Georgia does not offer boys’ volleyball in high school. I decided to ask the high school girls’ volleyball head coach to teach me the sport after school one day. I was hooked. My Mom enrolled me with A-5 Volleyball Club in Georgia. There, they had a practice gym open on Saturdays and Sundays for one on one practice with top coaches. Jing Hou, a former Assistant Coach of the Chinese National Team, was one of my favorite coaches. By my choosing, I would practice one on one each Saturday for 4+ hours working on developing my skills to where I felt they should be in order to be an effective player on the team.
We moved to Florida the summer of my freshman year, just after a couple months of training. I was happy to know they offered boys’ volleyball in high school. As a first time sophomore player, I made the Varsity team, and then joined a local Club team. Since my sophomore year, I have worked hard to become the best player I can be. I continue to develop my skills by listening to all my coaches and their feedback, as well as reviewing my video tape and watching higher level volleyball players on youtube. I have since switched Club teams to Ocean Bay Volleyball Club to instill better training and a high level of competition. I believe that improvement has no limits.
During my first season in volleyball, winter of 2014, I tried out and made USAV High Performance Select A2 team which practiced and played in Colorado. I was then selected to attend the USAV High Performance Holiday Training Camp in California, December 2015. Both camps were very beneficial to me teaching me different skills that I have worked with on and off the court. Summer of 2016, I made the USAV HP Boys Youth A1 Training Team and learned so much more. I have recently been invited to the 2016 USAV HP Holiday Training Camp.
Academically, I hold a 3.97 GPA. Although I have had some classes that I struggled with, I never give up on myself. I work hard to achieve my good grades and do not rely on my parents to push me along because I am responsible for my own grades. I am hoping to find a college with an Architecture program to help me in achieving my childhood dream of becoming an Architect.
My other activities include being the Vice President of our school’s Ping Pong Club as well as a member of the Key Club.
I am looking forward to becoming a collegiate athlete and pursuing volleyball as far as it will take me.
