Personal Statement

My name is Arlan Yang. I am the oldest in my family. I have many goals I want to achieve in my life. These goals can include finding friends, finding the love of my life, getting my own house, buying things I want and need, being the best volleyball player I can be, and many more to come. My main goal is to be able to go to college, and enjoy being in college. I will be the first in my family to be go to college. Although my father has gone to college he did not finish with a particular degree in a career. My father went to college to obtain knowledge of how college life is like to educate us about college life even if he did not finish with a degree. I still am deciding what I really want to major in. I am still a junior in high school, but I love planning ahead of time. I plan on becoming an Electrical Engineer or Energy Engineer, Veterinarian, or a coach/physical education teacher. I have been in the engineering program in high school to get college credit from the engineering course, free class free credits. I also have been volunteering at an animal shelter walking dogs to get a hands on interaction with animals. Lastly I have learned many leadership skills and dedication to an activity from the volleyball program that I attend, PAL (Police Activities League). I am hoping to be involved in many activities in college, not just going into classes and learning, but also going out to meet people who have the same goals and motivation as me.

I have many hardships in life and so do many other people. Many say I am too serious, too focused, and selfish, but I have one reason to do so: to become a better person both physically and mentally. Many of my friends, who are also teammates, have left the volleyball team because of the coaching methods, or just pure personality. Only one other member and I are left. This made me feel very lonely, and sad. I thought our team would stay together until the end of our JO Career, but I thought wrong. I then visualize myself standing on a battlefield, alone, with fog nearly touching the ground, dead trees standing as still as a frozen rock, and seeing my opponents with smirks on their faces. As I look behind me, my friends and team has deserted me. Even so I still went to every practice and work my hardest to become a better player and person for myself. I began thinking to myself; if they will not work hard to become stronger and better then I will. If I fail then I will lift myself back up and try again and again until success is in my hands. This motivated me to become better than I was yesterday. I may fall down once in a while and sit there, but as I think more about myself I become more confident. I realized hard work pays off once you begin to take the first step and keep on moving forward.

In school I learned that everything can be solved. We just need to look at every problem in different ways, and we do not need to use only one method. One method might be best in different problems, others may be great, others might be so-so. There is always an answer even multiple answers. I always thought to myself, what is my purpose, why am I here, what is the point? I won't find the answer now, but I believe one day the answer or answers will be there for me when the time comes.

I want to play volleyball in college. I don't want to play just in coed or in free gyms, but an actual team where there are dedicated, and committed players that will show up to every practice.
