Personal Statement

My name is Louis Arturo Zaina, I am currently a high school Junior in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The objective of this letter is to introduce myself to you and express my interests in pursuing an opportunity with your swimming program.

I was homeschooled from the third grade to the eighth grade. The homeschooling experience developed my critical thinking, created a passion for learning, and helped me become self directed and self motivated. These traits have contributed to my excelling in high school and athletics. In addition I have volunteered for five years at the children’s ministry at my church and operate a small yard work business with my brother.  

I began swimming and was introduced to water polo when I was going into the 6th grade. I loved both sports immediately and began to put every ounce of effort into each practice. In swimming, I enjoy the journey it takes to become a strong swimmer and the mental fortitude that it takes to stay strong.  Competing at a high level in both sports has required discipline and commitment.

Currently, I am a Junior at NexGen Academy.   My current GPA is 3.89, which ranks me 18th in my class. NexGen Academy has achieved a bronze ranking in the US news 2016 ranking of national schools. The most enjoyable part of my high school years have been the teachers and the nature of the projects. The highlight of my Junior year has been being accepted into AP Physics. I have grown a love for science and math through my years at NexGen Academy. The complexity and critical thinking that both those subjects need is really what drew me in. The career fields of forensic sciences, engineering, and architecture intrigue me. In addition, I may use my college education to help grow and improve my father’s commercial roofing business.

In conclusion, I believe that my passions, ideals, experiences, and commitments have shaped me to become a valuable asset to your team as well as your college.
