NCSA caught up with baseball and football standout Corbin Smith about his high school career and the opportunity to compete at the college level.
NCSA: What motivates you before a big game?
Smith: To me, every game is a big game. I treat every opponent as the same caliber as the next and think that both me and my team need to play their best game to win. Motivation to me is about being the most prepared and most focused when the game starts and outworking the opponent.
NCSA: What are you looking forward to if and when you get the opportunity to play at the collegiate level?
Smith: I am looking forward to having the opportunity to be on a great team with players that I enjoy playing with and playing for conference and national championships while also excelling as an individual.
NCSA: Why did you get involved in sports?
Smith: I have great passion for football and baseball and having the chance to win championships and have a great time in the process makes it that much better for me. Sports are my life and they help me be the best person I can be.
NCSA: Tell us about your interactions with college coaches so far.
Smith: At times I haven't gotten a ton of letters and e-mails from coaches, but most of the time, I have been receiving a good amount of response from coaches. Probably the most surprising letters I've gotten were baseball letters from Pepperdine and Arizona State and for football from Boise State. All three of those were very shocking.
NCSA: How are your teams doing so far? Any challenges this season?
Smith: Well, my football team's season recently ended in a loss in the sectional championship. We finished 7-5 and it overall was a very exciting year for both myself and the team. Baseball wise, I played on three summer league teams before football season started and I feel I have improved a lot of the weaker aspects of my game. I feel I have advanced my switch hitting ability to a new level and my throwing strength has improved to go with my glove. I also think I have become a stronger player mentally than I used to be, which for me is just as key as the baseball skills.
NCSA: What are your goals?
Smith: I want our high school team to win a state championship this season while performing individually at a very high level. I want to be the best person I can be both on the field and off of it and in the classroom. My ultimate goal is to get the opportunity to play baseball or football at the Division I level.
